Im a green bean, i was working on cafe bar today and very quickly mobile orders started to pile up and my coworkers had to help me. eventually they took me off bar and kept me on dto the rest of my shift, i understand how it is having to be patient with new people but it can be super draining coming in not having any work friends and being stuck at the window. any advice?

Follow beverage routine, pull shots on your second bar if you can for example Americanos and please do not steam milk on 2 bars, I see baristas do that and I’m like 🤦🏽♂️doesn’t make you faster
Salad_Accurate [OP]2 points2y ago
thanks! i really just struggle being able to multitask all the drinks, i try to do two at once but my shift told me i should be doing 3

Always look at your next 3 drinks, If you have a Latte, Americano and Caramel frapp
STEAM and PULL shots for latte, while that’s going PULL shots on second bar for americano, while that’s going, make your caramel frappe, While that’s blending, go back to the latte and finish it, then finish your americano, then finish your caramel frapp

thanks a lot i really appreciate the advice i’ll try this out tomorrow

However beverage routine can be challenging now due to massive modifications and excessive time on 1 drink

Don’t take it personally! It takes a lot of practice. Try to get as much bar time as you can during non-peak hours, like closer to close. Build good habits and make every drink to standard, and the speed will come with time.

well i open mornings lol we’re also super understaffed i want to be able to spend more time at bar but i feel like i make other pick up after me

one thing that has made me faster, besides drink sequencing, has been checking to see how many drinks are in an order, and specifically pulling out the stickers for that entire order. yes pull next 2 or 3 drinks, but if the order is longer than that pull the whole thing.
Salad_Accurate [OP]3 points2y ago
so smart lol cause i really be surprised looking at the same person’s drink, 2 drinks later...🤦🏽♀️

idk if this is against the rules, but while shots are pulling for americanos i like to fill up a steaming pitcher with water so i can just take the cup and pour water directly in. it saves time from having to walk over to the hot water tap.
when on cafe/mobile bar, if there are both mobile and cafe orders piled up, i like to sequence one cafe order and one mobile. steam milk, pump syrup, pull shots, pull another sticker, pour milk into steamer/pump syrups. when milk is done steaming for first drink, go ahead and start steaming for second drink. ask if any of your coworkers can make u some foam if u need it. i've been in ur exact situation before. i was put on cafe/mobile bar during a rush and orders were getting behind and i had to be put onto DTO. it was so embarrassing watching the people on bar pull like 20 backed up mobile stickers. the lobby was FILLED with people. you're not the only one who's gone thru this and u wont be the last, keep ur head up!! it will get so much easier
Salad_Accurate [OP]2 points2y ago
thanks a lot i’ll try that trick out ! i know i’m still learning and it’s just really busy that’s why my coworkers can be irritable but i really just want to be out of the way and also helping...but i end up failing both lol
canthelpimagoldfish4 points2y ago
what i do is i pull the stickers and line them up infront of me in the order they come. then i will prep four cups, at most, with syrups and what not along with pitches if needed. then i’ll take two or three cold bar items and knock those out. that’s what i do and it seems to help me.
Salad_Accurate [OP]1 points2y ago
this is so much more simpler than me just doing the first two i see 😔
canthelpimagoldfish2 points2y ago
also hey kid when i was working today i did warming and i figured i should tell you i do the same thing. i pull all the stickers and double up if i can and cook them then i put the ones not warmed or anything in the bags and run those then by the time i get back the sandwiches are fone
Salad_Accurate [OP]1 points2y ago
this has helped me so much i was on warming today thanks!!
canthelpimagoldfish1 points2y ago
doing cold coffees is easy too especially if they come in a row because i will prep cups and line the shots up.

I was kept on cs, window, and register for the first 3 months of my entire sbux career so don't worry if they take you off. It's not because you're bad, it's because they need you at another place!
Salad_Accurate [OP]2 points2y ago
yea plus we’re understaffed in the morning but sometimes i wish i could still do more...
-beam-me-up-1 points2y ago
Oof, yeah mornings it took me forever to get on bar. Miss and nights I was able to practice a little
obfsctr3 points2y ago
plan ahead, focus on each step

Cold bar: - when you start a few refreshers, pour water or lemonade into the cups to the first line, base to the 3rd line - start the Fraps by doing milk and roast for 2 blenders worth of Fraps (ie you CAN blend up to 3 venti caramel fraps together it’s dangerous but you can), so pour milk into that batch of cups, and then finish that blender and start it and then finish the other blender so you can start that one. While Blender 2 is going, pour and lid the Fraps from Blender 2 - if you’ve got Fraps and Refreshers, I’d start the frap blending first and then do your refresher, then finish the frap

Honestly I just think time makes you better. I didn’t get barely any bar time for almost 7 months, now I get bar time a lot. Be patient, it’ll all work out
idk-what-user-2pick2 points2y ago
Make sure you always have a drink started. Don't hand off a drink unless you already have another started (if you can help it).
lilkiosk1 points2y ago
Sequencing is huge. Also, if you have two tall lattes, you can usually get away with steaming milk for a venti and you won’t have to steam two pitchers. Have your milk poured for your next drink and make sure you start steaming for the next drink before pouring the steamed milk for the first one. Overall though, you’ll get faster with time and practice. I’ve been working at Starbucks for almost a year now and I’m one of the fastest at my store, but I started out slow too. We all do! It just takes lots of practice :)
kooo20011 points2y ago
this happened to me as well havent been back on bar for 2 weeks
Salad_Accurate [OP]1 points2y ago
yikes i feel like they’re probably going to keep me off for a bit too
