Rude customers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by KingBee204
So I’ve been working at the bux for a little over a month and I’ve only had a few rude customers (somehow). So for you more experienced baristas, what’s your worst rude customer story and how did you deal with them? I want to know so I have a clue of what to do when it happens.

ughh this one time still makes my blood boil! I was solo on DTO and the next car drove up. I greeted this older lady, but she was on the phone. She held out her credit card in a way so I would take it and handle the transaction. Her card didnt have a chip so she pretty much ordered me to take it and swipe it. We’re still practicing covid safety measures so I’m not supposed to take any cards unless its a gold card orr somethings wrong with the reader or transaction. As I held out the card reader, I showed her the side where she could swipe, and she clicked her tongue and reached out and slammed her card on the side of the card reader!! Her card fell onto the ground outside her car door and she got so frustrated. She drove up a bit, swung open her car door and grabbed her card. Her door hit the corner of the metal surface outside the DT window, and I saw a dent but i kept quiet. After that she swiped it on the card reader and I gave her her drink. She was mumbling things at me angrily and I said “I’m sorry ma’am but due to covid we aren’t really supposed to touch the cards.”
I dont remember what she said but as she drove off I slammed the window. I was literally shaking bc that was like my 3rd week and the rudest customer Ive ever encountered. My coworkers looked at me after and were like ‘yikes yeah that lady is trouble whenever she comes in, she calls the store to complain all the time, just shake it off’
***Just try to handle customers best you can by not getting angry and not taking things personal. Always offer to remake the drink, offer other items if something is unavailable, offer a refund, always put them first if you can. Always keep yourself a priority too. If someones yelling, try to get your manager or a shift to take your place. We’re all still human and its degrading and stressful when customers treat us like we’re anything less. Lean on your partners too, theyve all been thru this. You got this!***

I had a customer who would ask for caramel drizzle and whip on her caramel coffee the first time she ordered her child grabbed the drink and squeezed it and burned my hand it wasn’t bad at all but my nerves in my left hand are still shot and they happened last year she looked at me and said “well make me a new one! “ she never said are you ok? I had a customer look at her and at me and when my coworker remade her drink (not even a thank you) and the other customer made sure I was of course it wasn’t bad and I have a nice little scar near my wrist

Now she makes sure there’s caramel on the top and her mother will stir everything and it’ll I guess shrink is the right term and she’ll be like put more milk in this!

We nicknamed her “trumpet” (she wore a trump 2020 mask ) and last week all I said was “how are you! Today! “ and she said “you better not ask me if I’m vaccinated! That’s a invasion of HIPPA “ and I just blinked at her and when she left I mumbled “all I said was how are you? Ok?”

We had another customer complain to a manager at the store we are located at (grocery store) and said “so and so is too peppy you need to tell him to not be so peppy!” And the one manager who took it was like “ok? And told us what happened and said to be peppy “

One of my regulars literally called me an asshole for asking him to distance from others (I was at the door) when distancing was a thing. Even though it took everything I had not to drop kick him right there, I stood my ground and kept telling him about the store policy. My manager ended up talking to him and told him he will be banned the next time.
He actually ended up apologizing the next time I saw him and weve been great ever since.
Advice: know the store policies inside and out and hold your ground. Then tell your SSV or manager about it and hopefully they back you up like mine did.
