How to approach SM about hour cuts (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nightkat89
So I work at a cafe only store.

My old SM who is on his way out accepted my transfer under the agreement of a bare minimum of 25 hours as long as I keep open availability.

New SM takes over and my hours get cut (some weeks 12, some weeks 20.) We also hire four new partners, who are now working more hours than I am consistently on every schedule. Two of these new partners have limited availability.

I’ve talked to my new SM about it before and he mentioned that old SM said I need 15-20. I told him no because 1) I get benefits through Starbucks. 2) I can barely afford rent/bills as it is.

He sighs and says he will “see what he can do”

I mention about my open availability and willing to pick up hours on shifts I don’t normally work (they only schedule me nights for some reason) and he says “business needs”

New schedule comes out and once again the new hires are all working more than me; even the two who have limited availability.

I’m tired and fed up with it and I have a transfer approved for a new store opening but that’s not until June.

How do I approach this with my SM? I’m trying not to take it personally but every excuse he has given me I’ve found proof that it isn’t the case.

I’m beginning to wonder if he is uncomfortable around me as he is super religious and I am a trans partner. I’m REALLY hoping that isn’t the case.

Anyone have any suggestions how to approach this? He and I have talked several times about this already and it seems I hit a wall.

Have you talked to any of your shifts about this? They could maybe provide more insight since they’re with you on the floor as opposed to your SM. Sometimes baristas aren’t self aware of their work ethic. Not saying that’s the case for you but, the strongest baristas get the most hours at my store. They’re the ones that usually work the longer shifts or are the first to get called in when someone calls off. It’s just the way it is. Are there other stores in the area you could pick up hours at? We don’t really know all the details so it could be a number of things, I wouldn’t jump to prejudice...just bc once you go down that road you’re better off transferring out than dealing with what could be an even worse environment.

I’m a certified trainer and talk of being promoted to a shift position when I transfer. Been with the company for three years and I’ve checked in with my shifts on the regular because I want to learn from them so I can move up.

Our SMs solution was to put a piece of paper up that said for us to ask other stores if we want more hours.

What I don’t get is how he is giving hours to those who don’t maintain an open availability and are hard up on only working nights or mornings.

I have 16 years in retail and have handled scheduling for other major chains. We usually don’t do seniority and prioritize those with open availability/benefits first so they maintain eligibility.

Trust me, I’ve thought about every possible reason why it continues to happen. That’s why that voice even popped up in my head because at this point I’m just lost.
