At what point should a beverage at DT be called out for? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Psychedelic_Doughnut
I’ve heard various things about this and I want to know what the standard is for drive thru.

Let’s say I have Order A at the Drive Thru Window, and I have their order in hand and ready, do I call out Order B for the car behind them as what I now currently?

I’ve been told if I see my bar partner working on a beverage, I don’t need to call it out when I need it as they know what is needed.

But I’ve also been told I need to expedite everything as quickly as possible, and make sure the customers get their orders within good times.

However I don’t want to annoy my bar partner by telling them I need something in their hand, but I also want to make sure I have good drive times, so I just want to know what I should be doing.

Sincerely,

This is my take. I'm a four-year partner who has worked at three different DT stores.

There is nothing that annoys me more when I am on bar than someone calling out every drink they need at the window. When making drinks, I am making them as fast as possible in the order that they print. The person on window shouting what they need every two seconds is not remotely helpful. If there is a drink that is missing, and I am clearly making a totally different drink, and then they can call out to see if that one was forgotten somewhere. Otherwise, I think it causes unnecessary stress. To me, it feels like I am constantly being told that I am moving too slow, even though I'm going as fast as I can. Idk what other stores do, but I have never been in a store that calls out every drink they need in DT. The bar stickers print for a reason. Trust your bar partner(s) that they are moving as fast as they can to complete drinks. Drive times will not be increased by constantly telling the bar partner that you need the drink they have in their hand. People can only move so fast. If there is a big hold up, it's typically more effective to flex the play to increase support on bar or make sure customer connections are good than to focus on calling out drinks as they're need.

I never ever call out drinks at the window unless a) the car has been waiting a while or b) I see the barista on bar working on something entirely different than what I need right then. It’s stressful on the barista making the drinks and it gets really annoying to the point I have to tell the DTO person “I’m going as fast as I can. I have the drink *in my hand* just give me more than 10 seconds to do things.” or just get off bar entirely. It doesn’t make me work any faster, only pisses me off. Especially considering my store never has the staffing for CS so any milk, syrup, cups, lids etc we’re out of we have to get ourselves.

Ive been at 2 drive thru stores and we never called out what we needed unless it was added at the window. Your bar should be doing them in order and if they arent you should be addressing that, calling out the one you need wont fix the actual issue. Also if theyre just too slow how is calling out the drink going to get it to you faster? (Not addressed at you lol, just in general) They either need help or someone else on bar. Id just use common sense like if you see theyre working on the wrong drink and you need a different one at the window then tell them that. I had a co worker once who would panic everytime he didnt have a drink even if the customer hadnt payed yet and all it did was stress me tf out. If you dont imediately need it then theres no point. Maybe your store is different though so the best thing to do is ask your sm what you guys do.

I agree when a partner works like you but one I have is so temperamental yet she is constantly having beverages for cars two and three ready yet doesn’t even have the sticker on the cup for someone who has already been at the window for a whole minute yet she tells me to go and connect

I guess it all depends on your store but at mine, no matter if i know they are making the drink I need or they know i’m waiting, i still have to call it out sometimes just to confirm or to get it out faster. Yes it’s annoying but literally every single person at my store has to do it just so we are keeping the drinks in order because sometimes tags get lost or someone else is making the drink that’s not om drive bad!
