Close, but not quite right, at least not in California. The state requires a 30 minute unpaid meal break for any shift longer than 5 hours, and a 10 minute paid rest break for every 4 hours worked — “or major fraction thereof” (meaning 2 hours or more), except that no breaks are required for a shift shorter than 3.5 hours.
So in California, you would get a 10 minute break for any shift 3.5 hours or longer, a 10 and a 30 minute break for any shift longer than 5 hours, and two 10s and a 30 for any shift longer than 6 hours. There are some extra rules for shifts longer than 8 hours (e.g. you get an extra meal break after 10 hours), but that doesn’t happen very often here.
