Venti Rant/ Drive Thru & Names (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mrbubblegxm
So for background information. We all have to ask for names at the box and tell them our name at our store. This is in Starbucks half assed “psychology” attempt to suckle more money out of people by faking friendliness.

It’s dumb. I am a drive thru champ at my store. I’ve noticed for a while now it’s just plain stupid to ask for names. Other partners working DTO, will go, Hi there my name is So and So! What’s yours?

Customers always go huh? or venti iced caramel macchiato.

You can’t fake being nice to people. Asking for names isn’t going to make people like you. What I do is a simple yet respectful greeting and 8/10 people always respond back.

“Good afternoon. Welcome to Starbucks. How are you doing today?”

It’s almost like if you treat people like people rather than asking for their names which is a really uncommon practice for drive through. people will respond better.

plus you can never hear for our headsets so if you speak too softly or too loud the customers will go: WhAT!??!? So you have to repeat yourself, and it throws you off your game for the rest of the order.

if you ask strangers their name right off it might make them uncomfortable so i always asks for names @ the end so that it feels more genuine.

We did this for like a day at my store and it was such a waste of time. People have no idea why you would need their name at the drive through and it just confused them and made box times longer

Our DM pretty much forces us to get names as part of the greeting. She'll come through randomly just to make sure we're doing it every car. It's ridiculous and you're right: it doesn't help connections.

Really, it probably hurts connections. I know when I go to drive thrus, I rehearse my order and expect them to want to hear it right away. Asking for a name in right off the bat just messes with my rhythm.

My go-to (non-DT store but it’s still amusing):

“Hi how are you today?”

“Venti caramel macchiato”

“You know, I’m feeling rather lemon loaf myself”

*surprised Pikachu face when they realize I’m an actual human*

We ask for names to stall just that little extra bit when we are in full peak.

We briefly required the partner on DTO to ask names. It died pretty quickly. One girl was angry we even asked. It was so strange. She literally angrily yelled back “do I really have to give you my name??!”

I don't ask for names at my store and one time I was going thru DT at a store far away and the guy asked for my name and I was so confused 😭😭 anyway its a ethnic name and he didn't even end up putting it on my order

this is what i fear since my district’s DM wants us to do this.... i didn’t want to tell my manager that i thought it was stupid to her face but it just sounds like an awful concoction. like come on, do you want faster drive times or better connection scores? make up your minds 😭

This is crazy, I haven’t heard of this in my district. I’m so sorry you have to do this, it sounds like added pressure, especially during peak. I will definitely refuse to ask for people’s names in drive thru. That’s ridiculous. I would have so much anxiety asking someone their name for no reason in drive thru

We’ve been doing it pretty consistently. Honestly, it’s so rote I don’t really even think about it anymore. We do it at the end after they order:

Ok, I’ve got a (repeat back order) what’s your name?

Ok (name) your total is $$$ and (Dtr person) will see you at the window!

ETA: we don’t have the newer drive through screens that show the order like many stores do.
