Scared to work (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mobrien911
I just got hired today and was pretty excited. After reading through this Reddit thread I’m now really scared😳 I can’t find one post that says it’s a good place to work. I’m 24 and have had trouble finding a job, but should I keep looking for something else instead?

Don’t worry about the bad stuff right now. Yes, it can get tough at times but as long as you have coworkers that you like, the work is fun! I know a lot of the reason why the Reddit platform has so much of the bad experiences and stuff is cause it’s mostly anonymous and it’s a place you can vent without taking it out on your coworkers or managers or you can get advice on a situation. But tbh the job itself is fun especially if you are able to form friendships and connect with the people you work with!

Thank you that’s very true, the store manager who hired me seems super nice so hopefully I’m just overthinking it.

I came to work for this company as a burnt out, lost person, and it has turned my life around in so many ways. I know that sounds like I'm drinking too much kool-aid, but the benefits (free college) and the friends I have made have been worth the steep learning curve. Give it a shot. You aren't giving yourself enough credit.

People love to come to this subreddit to rant. For some people it is the only place they can do it. Not everyone has a bad experience but a lot of people do. Every store is different and you can have an amazing experience. Not everyday is terrible or busy but when they are this is a good place to get out stress. I would say go for it! Your stores might be amazing and you will love it! Don’t let the subreddit bring you down, and if it doesn’t work out you can find a better place to work at!

I like my store and my job! I started in March. Like any job it has it’s problems, but there’s a lot of variation between stores on how the environment is

This is Reddit, we just like to sh&* on everything here 😂 But honestly, this job has absolutely burnt me out, wore me down, fucked me over, and also saved my life. There's always bad days, bad managers, sh%*&y customers or workmates, sure. But in the flurry of all that, there is family. There is teamwork. There's a really fun job. There's amazing experiences with customers. We don't really use the term anymore, but it really was my third place. And then it became my only place. The only place I could really be myself, the place I learned to not give a f*%k what other people think, where I learned how to stand up for myself, and where I learned family can be chosen. One of my partners (someone I trained!) literally drove me to my house with her husband one night to get my stuff and leave. I live with my bf now, but on days when he's at work and I have a bad mental health day, I call my partners, or go to my store. That's my second home. As much as I hate it there sometimes, I love it. Don't be scared. Go in with an open mindset. Be set on making friends. Embrace the crazy and just try your best love!

I quite enjoy my job. After being laid off last year and losing my entire career I was just looking for a filler job until I figured things out but I actually really like working here. I’m now a shift supervisor and don’t have any plans to leave.

Many of the complaints I’ve seen on here seem to come to poor management. I think if you work at a location with good management you’ll have a good experience.

Yup me too. Had my interview yesterday, hired on the spot, came home and read this subreddit now I’m like ... hmmmm

But I’m looking forward to this experience !

I feel the same exact way. I got hired officially on Monday, and now I’m terrified to go into my first shift next week after reading all the horror stories. I’m excited to start but also wish I hadn’t found this sub

Remember that this is a place to vent, more bad experiences are going to be posted than good. It's also a food service job, it has a lot of ups and downs like any other job in the industry. It heavily rides on your co-workers as well as managers / ssv's, if you get good ones it makes it a whole lot easier and enjoyable. Only negative I can say up front without a doubt is the pace that corporate expects us to operate at, it can be extremely draining but again it depends on your coworkers if it's bearable or soul-sucking.

Just be prepared to have a lot of info dumped on you during training but no one expects you to remember all of it, it takes about 2 months to get things down.

Thank you! Do you have any advice to prepare for my first day?
Shige_ 3 points 2y ago
Your first day if officially called a "first sip" basically you go in meet with your SM, fill out some paper work, get your apron / name tags / pins / etc, talk about starbucks as a company and what they stand for, maybe taste test some coffee, and meet some your co-workers.

As for your training period (5 days typically) you'll be paired with a barista trainer and you'll basically do modules in the BOH on an ipad or laptop then you'll go practice those modules up front with your trainer. Always be asking questions and stay engaged with your trainer, don't feel bad for asking for clarification multiple times on something even after training is over, it's better to ask than to do something wrong.

Basically go into this knowing that you're not going to know everything or feel completely comfortable in all the roles until a couple months in and that's totally normal, remember it's just coffee at the end of the day.
