I just finished my second week. It’s rough, lots of memorizing stuff, but yesterday the cold bar clicked and i understood how to make everything except a couple fraps, still haven’t mastered hot bar because how many shots abs pumps still confuses me. But I’m getting there. My main advice is that it doesn’t all happen right away, it takes a few months to get everything down. I’ve also been using $1 quiz to study. But you’ll do great and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

after almost two years i still get confused with frapps
the-OG-darkshrreder 6 points 2y ago
I just got off a shift on cold bar, fraps are now my enemy
sammieduck69420 3 points 2y ago
i HATE frapps. so much so, if i have a frapp when i’m on bar, my coworkers always take it for me 😭
the-OG-darkshrreder 2 points 2y ago
Oh that’s nice, i was the crap guy on cold bar today, another person was doing the teas/refreshers
Webshooter38 2 points 2y ago
2.5 years for me and I still confuse myself on cold brew drinks.

One thing I have my green beans do when they're learning bar is writing cups. I know we don't do it anymore because of stickers but if you take a bunch of cups of each size for hot and cold, practice writing all the "parts" of the drink on it. It has the same things on the POS on the far right side when you ring in a drink so you can even see what exactly you should be writing.

Just go through each cup and write the type of milk, syrup and how many pumps, and how many shots and what kind of espresso it gets.

It is really confusing at first but once you get the hang of it it's great!

i’ve been working for close to 2 months now and some of the best advice i can give is ASK FOR HELP when you need it. don’t fret over mistakes we all make them. don’t take things personally partners get annoyed at situations not at you specifically. do your best and find things to do. not sure what you can do ask someone. and if you want more time on a specific role ask for it.

for dress code neutrals are your best bet. black, grey, beige, navy, etc. your atore should have a dress code poster somewhere. as for shoes you’re gonna want thick shoes (preferably non-slip) walmart has some great work boots and they’re affordable too! 10/10 would recommend.

ahhh thank you so much!! i’m so nervous !!
crypticerbread 5 points 2y ago
we get 30% off on at sketchers & shoes for crews i believe... definitely invest in nonslips! things get spilled all the time and the cold bar is almost always inexplicably wet. trust me you don’t want to fall and if you do, you want to get that worker’s comp!

also if you can buy cheap clothes as a separate work wardrobe. practical and comfortable is the way to go, plus the starbucks smell (coffee, syrup, food) will linger. walmart is good and target men’s clearance as well as thrift stores.

ps: don’t waste your time studying drinks :) it might help a little but the best way to learn is just to get practice, and your free time should be yours. don’t let this job affect you too much outside of work. always remember, it’s just coffee!

The number of syllables in the size of the drink(and whether it’s iced or not) will 98% of the time be the number of shots in any espresso drink. Ie Grande = 2, tall =1 Venti =2 Venti Iced=3
kxnkycxrly 2 points 2y ago
also with number of letters in each word besides tall rhymes with small. Grande 6 letters medium. Venti 5 letters large

oh my gosh your a genius 😋🙌🏻🙌🏻

Just ask for as much time on bar as possible. If you’re at least good on bar then you can be utilized so much more compared to only being good on window / DTO.
Also, play with the register, familiar yourself with the layout of the POS. Everything is categorized together in a way that makes sense (:

Yooo! Congrats! I got hired 3 weeks ago and am still loving it. I got hired on as a shift supervisor. No coffee experience, but lots of management experience. Learning stuff has been interesting but everything is starting to click. Learning both barista and SSV at the same time has been kinda hard, but everyone has been patient which I appreciate. I recommend writing down the different drinks on a note book or a piece of paper you can have on the counter. It’s really helped me a lot. The different amounts of syrups, and shots for different drinks is what really thru me for a loop. I found this little ring of cards on how to make each drink, which has also been a huge help, ask if your store if they have one. I had no idea strawberry creme frapps had classic! Lastly, you must try making a frapp with cold brew instead of frapp roast, and vanilla sweet cream instead if milk. BEST FRAPP EVER!!! Good luck on everything!! #fellowgreenbean

so proud of you green bean! you’ll mostly be on DTR so just always repeat orders back to a customer, no matter how long the line is. If a customer isn’t in the mood to talk, no biggie. It really won’t hurt your customer connection score as much as your shift says it will 😒
refreshers get shaken, don’t let the lazy baristas fool you.
Vanilla sweet cream cold foam is not all what it is hyped up to be.
If someone wants a decaf Frappuccino, make it Creme based and add a shot of decaf espresso.
stay away from the task of doing drains, they suck.
if you need to make two grande hot lattes at once, you don’t have to use both machines. you can pull four shots and just split between the 2 cups. Helps the drinks get made faster.
whip cream goes on all Frappuccino’s unless otherwise stated except on basic coffee and espresso frappes.
you cannot accept a personal tip from a customer unless they put it in an envelope with your name on it.
You get tipped weekly and the tip rate is horse crap.
take your break if you open before peak cause they won’t let you go during.
If someone asks if you want to do dishes, always say yes lmao. it’s better than being on the floor.
That’s all I can think of for now but I hope this random knowledge helps.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1iNNnd7yhWPJoLZMxCP5nk9AIJabCnR9bpndzgA1L1Yc/edit here’s a google slide that i made for training. i really made it for myself but so many other ppl wanted it i decided to make it like “welcome to the team” lol i found it really helpful!
iSpeakMeme 2 points 2y ago
I love this, I've been working on one similar for my team too. I would just say to update it when you get the mastrena 2 because you can pull ristretto and other shots in groups of 3 now so it's a bit easier
ohnoifuckedupfr 2 points 2y ago
oh i quit a couple months ago 😬 i didn’t even know about that though! i’ll have to edit in a footnote ab it.
KobraKiddisalive 2 points 2y ago
Aaaa!!!!! From an SSV, congratulations!!! Dress code is super easy, it should be posted either on a fridge/freezer, wall, door, somewhere where it’s easy to spot. But for the most part all neutral colors are good, no heels or sandals, the basics of just wear what you don’t mind getting dirty or covered in stains. ASK FOR HELP!!!!!! It is so important that you as a partner feel comfortable asking for help. I know that my baristas feel comfortable asking me to help them or asking me what they think are dumb questions but when you’re new/still learning nothing is a dumb question!!! You’ll do great!! 🥳🥳 you got this!!!
lil-honey67 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
thank you so much!!
KobraKiddisalive 1 points 2y ago
Of course!!!! I hope you have a good time!!!!!
OlHyena04 2 points 2y ago
Good luck, dress code should be post on wall or door.
darling2 2 points 2y ago
Ask all of your questions to whomever is around you and if no one is around just fake it til you make it! You’ll really get the hang of things after a couple months, just stick with it and accept that with your successes will come a few mess ups too! Everyone has their remakes!

Give yourself time , unless you are some kind of genius u won’t learn them just by memorizing, you have to do in order to learn , try to be helpful around the bar by cleaning around during peaks , being slow on the Mastrena can be frustrating , try doing drinks when there few customers so you can also think about the process clearly not rushing to the next one , try focusing on getting the drink done perfectly not fast , trust me its much more appreciated, you would rather have something worth the wait than a “it does not taste good can you make me a new one “ , maybe sitting on hand-off a couple of days so you get comfortable with the name of the drinks and a bit of Customer interaction . Everyone has a way of doing things , just find yours .
