My manager using slurs (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NotyourangeLbabe
My manager frequently uses the r slur and I cannot stand it. It makes me genuinely uncomfortable. She uses it while she jokes around with us and just stares into my soul while she laughs and i fake chuckle while silently hating myself. In a general sense she’s a good manager. She treats me with respect most of the time and actually works on the floor with us which seems to be rare in my district. Compared to all the awful managers I’ve had, she’s pretty good. But the one thing I can’t over look is her using the r slur. And I don’t know what to do about it. I mean yea, I could report it. But honestly I’m afraid of the backlash from her should she find out I’m the one that said something. And my manager likes me and I’m very comfortable at my store and I guess I don’t want to disturb that. But that makes me feel complacent in the face of ignorance....but also, shouldn’t I pick my battles? If everything else is fine and this is my only qualm, why disrupt the peace? Idk. I’ve been going back and forth about this in my head for months and I guess I decided venting about it on here was the only move I’m going to make. Boo.

Stop pretending to find it funny. Speak with her one on one and tell her that the use of that word makes you extremely uncomfortable and you would like it if she would stop. If you already have a good relationship, they will understand, and if they value their job, they will stop.

You’re right. I’m such a chicken when it comes to confrontation, but you’re right.

So am I!!! It's so bad.

Personally I find a little comfort in it if I already have a solid relationship with someone. To me that feels a little safer because I feel like they'll be more inclined to understand and see my point of view.

But of course it all depends on how you go about it. Just make sure you're civil, let them know it makes you uncomfortable and that you would prefer they used a different word.
