I have worked at my store for almost four months, and have done almost exclusively opens. My store opens at 5am, and as a full-time college student this has absolutely been killing me. mental and physical health down the drain, too tired to maintain social relationships, etc. i have negotiated my way into only opening on the weekends, however I just want to get off of working early mornings completely. i have been told that they "absolutely need me" to open that early, but there are other ppl, and frankly?
i hate working like this.
I want to change my availability this summer so that i do not work before 9am, and i know my manager will absolutely not want this. and i lose my excuse of prioritizing school over my job during the summer, so I am asking for advice to help me negotiate my way into swapping my entire availability

It’s hard believe me just try to talk to your boss. I have a 6 month old and my boss gave me the hardest time changing my availability when I lost my babysitter. I was trying to work 3 day a week but they are forcing me to do 4. I would just tell your boss that getting up that early is affecting school work etc.

School is way more important than a job that you don’t want to stay at forever. Let it be known to your SM that you need to change your availability and if it’s denied you might need to start looking for a different job. “Absolutely needing you” is not worth your mental health.

Frame it like ‘I want to be the best I can be here, and I’ll do better work later in the morning.’ I’m a closer and recently another SM made our schedule and scheduled me way out of my availability, I took it to my SM and she fixed it, when she did she said she wants to set every one of us up for success, and for me, that just doesn’t include being awake that early. I know it’s kind of cheesy but the ‘set every one up for success’ phrase has stuck with me. We do better if we are set up for success because we’re less stressed out

Can you think of a reason that your request would benefit the SM? You obviously are a great employee. Do you feel that if you kept up that shift that you might quit? This job is just one part of your life, your mental and physical health should be priorities. Have a talk with the SM and share your concerns. Hopefully, they value you enough to honor your request. Here is the kicker, if they don't you may need to find different job. You have skills, and you're smart, be in a place that values you. May you be comforted. May you be comforted. May you be comforted.
