Tips for being a shift manager (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NinjaBabysitter
Any advice is great.

I work in a quiet store but It can have busy spikes or a constant flow of customers. On top of this we have Uber and Just Eat deliveries and only have 3 staff on shop floor or worst case 2 because some shift managers disappear to the office. As a barista it’s frustrating, if I become a shift manager I have way more responsibility to manage this. That’s my only real concern

Utilize the deployment app and make sure your baristas are planted. Keep yourself in a Support or CS role until it’s slow enough to be on register. Then focus on that area and let your barista focus on bar. And make sure you hold your shifts accountable. If they’re in the back and you’re the play caller, but them on a bar or on hand off.

Two words: Time. Management. That, and try to keep a mindset of being able and willing to do anything you delegate to someone else (with the exception of shift specific stuff like money). The shift that trained me as a shift is super loved bc she will be the first one to jump in anywhere she’s needed if it serves the play and flow better to do. That made a huge impression on me and I try to operate with that in mind. People are more likely to follow a leader who they trust and can relate to on a fundamental level.
