IBS/Chronic Illness HELP!! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Repulsive_Weekend_70
Hi!! I’m a relatively new green bean (about 3 months), and I was wondering if any partners suffer from IBS or another GI disorder? I’ve had several days now where I enter into a flare up and cannot go into work, and end up feeling INCREDIBLY guilty for not being able to attend — is there anything that you do on your end to make it easier for your fellow partners, SSV, and SM? Is there anything your partners can do to make your shifts when you’re suffering from a flare up more comfortable? I’m on the road to getting it more manageable for daily life, but don’t want to lose my job over my chronic illness!!

Undiagnosed, and working at a Tarbucks, but it's well known I have some serious stomach issues. Currently on the clock and toilet now actually lmao. Just be open and honest, it sucks, but nobody wins in this situation, and everyone should be understanding as a result. Don't sweat it too much!

Also have IBS and coming back to work after a year. Honestly, drink water and avoid any drinks or food. I find that any time I eat or have a drink with even a tiny bit of caffeine, I’m MIA for the rest of my shift. So much sugar and caffeine in the drinks makes for a very unhappy tummy. Also, just be open and honest with your team. The company clearly states that if you have stomach issues, you need to go home. If there’s any issue with that, take it up with your DM or corporate. Good luck!!

Empathy here because I have a family member with UC. I would hope that a sympathetic shift would let you freely visit the bathroom (although there is no control over whether customers are taking up both). Get good documentation from your gastroenterologist and primary care docs for every flare, visit, issue for when you have to call out. Also sip water, stay hydrated. You are probably not alone in this among partners.

i have ibs and i’m brutally honest with all of my managers. i always make sure someone covers my spot and tell them i have to take a dump and they are always nice about it. as long as you tell them, you should be fine!!

I have IBS and have had to deal with calling out because my condition. I spoke with my SM and let her know that I have stomach problems, and I’m going to have to call out or leave at times. But that I have seen a GI doctor and have documentation of my condition if she wanted it. She was understanding and following that conversation I let my SSV’s know (when I called out) that I have a condition.

At first I was embarrassed telling fellow partners of my problem but mine were understanding about me calling out.

To be on the safe side and you may want an accommodation under the ADA. In that case you’ll need to call Sedgwick and go through the steps to get an accommodation (You’ll need to provide evidence from a doctor.) That way you can have something on file with corporate and are less likely to be separated for calling out.

Fellow IBS suffering barista! My ssvs are very understanding abt it, I agree with the other comment about getting some kind of medical documentation for bad flare-ups that may cause you to miss work altogether. Also yea, stay hydrated, avoid trigger foods before work and make sure to have any meds/food that helps you/other emergency supplies with you.

Hang in there bud, working with IBS sucks but you're not alone!
