what’s the point in telling newer partners that they can’t bar because you need strong bar partners... how are they supposed to become strong bar partners if you never let them bar?
FfierceLaw25 points2y ago
Oh, this really hits home. Plus I never get scheduled during slower times. And when I do get put on bar it's when I least suspect, think I'm heading into my last hour on front/warming and then all of a sudden, so my fight or flight gets triggered. If they would give some warning. This is because your SSVs and SM are all about drive through times, assuming you are in a drive through store. Keep asking/demanding. Ask your SM to come up with a plan. If you usually have 2 partners barring (one on cafe/mobile the other on drive through, like we have a sticker machine for each) ask your SM to schedule you to bar with one of those "strong" partners who can also take a lot of questions, be helpful, have some patience. SM should also or an SSV be checking in on you for questions

That’s why I insist to jump on bar right after my first two weeks. Cause I already told myself that I have no problem with dishes or Support/ Front or DT. But if they won’t give me any chance to be near the bar after 2-3 weeks since hiring, I’ll quit for sure.
temporarynothings15 points2y ago
It took me 6 months to get more than 10 minutes of bar time. Once you become good on bar be careful what you wish for, bc in these 4 months of I’m not solo DT I’m bar 😅
dkr18296 points2y ago
I know right 😂 I used to feel so excited everytime I come in and my shift tell me to go to cold bar/ espresso bar. But since I learned so quick on both, now they constantly put me on bar over a year. And once I log in everyday now, I only want to kms or wish if someone could come murder me 💀💀
temporarynothings6 points2y ago
right! i’ll still take cold/hot bar over drive thru though 🥴

Anything that does not require to communicate with customer is fine to me, even dishes 😂😂

I have been a partner for 2 weeks at a corporate store and 5 months at a Tarbucks, and all they do is put me on bar 🤦🏻♀️
liveingalpal6 points2y ago
That’s my issue. I’ve been working for a near two months and I am excellent at front and DTO/DTR and have only been on bar once. I feel like no one wants me to do it because I’m too new BUT LET ME LEARN
mx1_jawbreaker4 points2y ago
not sure if this is a bad(?) opinion, but my two cents is to get good OUTSIDE of work. really make sure you know the syrups & drink orders. the only reason why i got "strong" on bar was bc i showed that id worked in slower non-starbucks stores, but had enough of the basics to learn new skills. i was able to pop out drinks slowly, but with all the correct modifications & I didn't need to keep asking the main bar person for help.
still took me like eight months to get put on main bar. but it worked out.

Great $1 prepared by u/FireBreathingCabbage and share on Reddit, they have more too

Any tips for memorizing syrups etc? I'm trying to do exactly this
mx1_jawbreaker1 points2y ago
late reply -- yeah! I remember it in a really silly way though 3 - 4 - 5 -- regular hot latte drinks. this one is just memorized through repetition. 3 - 4 - 6 -- regular cold drinks. the "6" for the venti bc you're adding +1 espresso shot, so you need +1 sugar pump
2 - 3 - 4 -- caramel machiato. remember -1 syrup bc you're adding all the caramel drizzle.
1 - 2 - 3 -- vanilla cold brew. just a pump per size. bc you're getting all the sweetness from the sweet cream.
and then iced teas/coffees should follow the regular cold drinks formula ! let me know if this helps!

I worked at a kiosk for two years prior to trying out corporate. Obviously in a kiosk you do everything and I thrived in that environment. The moment I got to corporate, I was stuck strictly on register or DTO for the three months I worked there. I didnt feel like a barista, I felt like a cashier and put my three week notice in after two months and went back to my kiosk where I'm now the manager.
With my newest hire, she just got certified and wanted to be on bar right after so she jumped in while I was on register. I answered any questions she had and she did fantastic! Give new hires a fucking chance. They might just surprise you. There's a reason they were hired after all and went through training. If you as a trainer didnt utilise all 40 hours (that's how many we get in our tiny kiosk) of training to make them feel confident as a barista then step back up and fix the situation.

I literally asked every day if I could be on bar when I first started. I would also jump on cold bar and help with those drinks while on POS and look up the recipes or shout out questions. I've been a partner for about 8ish months now and they put me on bar all the time.
spacebrain4202 points2y ago
I've been with the company for a month and I've been on nothing but bar. I did warming for the first time today and can count on one hand how many times I've been on the register.
samsauce962 points2y ago
I'm good on bar and now I'm always thrown on bar. I hate it 😂 I don't mind making drinks but it's very easy to get overwhelmed. Be thankful for now 😂😂
FfierceLaw2 points2y ago
Since you're strong on bar, when/if your store gets green beans, offer to bar with them after they are done training, if your store keeps at least two partners on bar, mine does. GBs need partners who are willing to answer questions, not big questions like "how do you make this drink" but little ones like "Does this get Classic?" or "3 pumps or 4?" I wish I could get that opportunity. Yes, I had training and I studied away from work more than I should have but now I need experience

to become a "strong bar partner" i had to ask and ask my sv to let me bar when it was slow enough after peak. unfortunately for me i did this before the holiday season and by the time i was good at bar i was placed on it all the time during the holidays😅
OrangeOctopusHair2 points2y ago
I was working at my store for 6 months before I was ever on bar more than 30 minutes every week or so, and even then only because I had surgery and couldn't talk or move fast. Depending on your shift, something the SUV will just forget because of how busy they are. It sucks but drive stores are harsh sometimes
FragrantWin91 points2y ago
This was a huge problem at my old store and most of the reason I left. I was the only AM “strong bar” left by the end of last summer after COVID and the -options- pushed everyone out. I pushed so hard to have them train others when I realized the other strong bar people were leaving. It never happened.

i just want to put it out there, we all have gone through the process of being on pos or dtr for our first few weeks/months. we understand completely, you want to be on bar. and trust me, we want new beans to learn. as a ssv, after peak, most of us do not care about dt times, but we also can’t afford to have people waiting 15+ minutes at the window because someone needs time on bar. they have to be paired with someone who can multitask, guide the new barista but keep the flow going, which lately all stores are barely scraping by peak with a fully staffed team, and much less spare a partner to do just that. it’s a lot easier to pick things up at night from my experience, so if you’re able to work at night, that’s the best option. and if not, please be patient, your time will come, guaranteed!
Deeeeeevvvv1 points2y ago
I tell them if they want to work bar, study the menu. Know the stuff.
pinkconvertiblematd1 points2y ago
Any tips on how to remember stuff? I just started and I have a nightmare of a time trying to remember the syrups
Deeeeeevvvv1 points2y ago
Find the patterns. Look at it on your days off. It’s literally like homework. The more you study, the better you do.
logicallyserial1 points2y ago
ive worked at starbucks for 1 month now! its tough but the think im most thankful for is my shift supervisor alex who on one of my first days asked if i would like to do bar or drive. i said bar bc i hate hate hate talking and fumbling with the register. ever since then hes put me on bar and now im being told left and right what a good job im doing, and being put on drive bar on sundays. keep asking for hours on bar if you arent given them, the more practice you get the easier itll be.
square_pulse1 points2y ago
It's my 2nd month now, I'm pretty good at register and warming now. Maybe they gonna rotate me lol. Only have worked during those 2 months at bar during slow times like 5x and one time at the tail of peak and I internally died that day hahaha.
Honestly...I am also very fine just doing warming/reg lol
