I ran my first shift this weekend and had to do this to one of our poor green beans. I felt so bad, but she really did a pretty good job and I rescued her just as soon as I could.

When the shift puts you anywhere even after 4 months:

I swear, 50% of my time as a shift is spent telling people how much better they are at the job than they think they are. I have partners who have run all bars solo who still have a look of dread when I tell them they’re on cafe bar during the afternoon.

THIS! Right now our store has 3 baristas that know what they’re doing and the rest are either green beans or they’ve been there for 7 months and still have no idea what’s going on. I was on bar yesterday for my whole shift (10 hours) with a green bean or alone since opening and I basically made all the drinks and just had them hand them off because they were too slow or didn’t know half the drinks they were making lol. It’s rough in the bux lately

Someone should make "quick-to-the-point per-recipe-cards of how to make each drink" training videos for green beans to review. Make them like a test, can they follow along with each step, staying a step ahead to make the drink in the video?
Show recipe card full screen at the beginning of making the drink.

I made myself a a diy recipe book in a field notebook. Cribbed from the app menu. I tossed in day dates and other reminders.
That was my training lol.

I've had this happen to me. A lot. I usually ask them what they know and what they don't. If they don't know anything, I either give them iced teas and refreshers (the instructions are on the shaker), or give them specific tasks like "this is a grande white mocha, it gets four pumps from that pump there" \*points at white mocha\* and either guide them through the drink on bar two or ask them to do specific things I would do if I had a third hand.
