struggling with customer support role(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by babyaphrodita
so i’ve been struggling to fall into a stable groove / cycle when i’m on CS. basically what i do at this point is: - brew coffee - restock all milks - refill ice - take out trashes - small load of dishes - see what else is needed (restocking, sanis, etc.) and repeat
does anyone have any advice about how to more effectively perform on customer support? i’ve even been having trouble incorporating cycle tasks. any advice is appreciated.

If you’re not sweating on CS then you’re doing it wrong

Coffee, milks, cups/lids, ice, one load of dishes, change trash, spot sweep, wipe down all counters, sanitizers, if your lobby is open-spot clean

I never was the best at being CS, but as much as it is Customer Support, it's also Colleague Support! They are not keeping up with the drinks on Bar, you go help and same with the ones at cash. There's also everything around restock and all, but if you can't find anything else to do, well, there's the clean play to be done everyday ^-^

While I definitely can appreciate why this is helpful, there should be a conversation with your shift to make sure they’re aware that bar is struggling to keep up. They can use Playmaker to adjust, or assign partners to flex into different roles accordingly.
The decision to flex should come from the shift. Unfortunately, some shifts suck and won’t make that call when appropriate, so I understand why you might feel the need to take it upon yourself.

I get that, it depends on what kind of store you work at, the shifts leads and how's the chemistry between everyone on the floor that's for sure! I work at a small mallbux where you can be like maybe 5 people on the floor during a week day and have 2 backstores because of the store size , so sometimes you just can't wait for the shift when they're not there, but in the second backstore doing the order x-x

Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

As a shift, I am going to put myself on CS 9 times out of 10. And if anyone else is CS then I trust them to make the call. You can always catch up on dishes later. If bar needs help, go help them

i’m definitely not the best at Cs but when i’m in there i’d like to make list to feel more efficient, don’t forget to stock cups lids make backups. backups sound harder than they are but i can’t promise you it’s easy also don’t forget to santize cafe!

Don't feel like you have to do all of those cycle tasks every cycle! I don't know how big/busy your store is, but you shouldn't need to restock milk every 30 minutes (and if you do, you may want to reevaluate how much of each milk you keep in a fridge lol). Same for ice bins, lids, etc.
So maybe your cycle looks like: Timer goes off, brew coffee, check cafe/restrooms, restock milks, ice, lids, do some dishes. Timer goes off, brew coffee, check cafe/restrooms, make some backups, empty some trash.

Often forgotten in restocks- espresso beans! I also always check for syrups that the bars might run out of soon and keep them out on the floor so it could be a quicker swap. I also look out for little things like cinnamon and other powders ooooh and the berries. I think the best bet is to anticipate what's going to be needed soon. So when doing dishes I check the whips and caramels to see what needs to be washed first so I can make them before needed. Lol CS is my favorite position 😅 And as someone who does CS alot don't forget the trash. My biggest pet peeve is when I go outside to check the trash to find trash all over the ground because it hasn't been changed all day.

30 min timer on you at all times!

For me CS is all about communicating with your shift and your partners to help out with whatever needs to be done to make the store function easily. The task list is important, but sometimes other things take precedent. Ask your partners if they need anything. Keep an eye on back ups and expiration times. Check the fridges, syrups, teas, and inclusions often. If you have down time, prep things for later. It seems overwhelming but I really enjoyed CS. You get to do everything and hop around rather than being planted in a position.

gonna agree with everyone here. but you don’t always have do ice every cycle. my advice: fully stock all ice bins (or at least the big one) when they’re close to low, that way you’re not grabbing a bucket every cycle.

i have a very busy store so i feel the cycle tasks is the last thing on our list. assuming you’re only on customer support and not front register i usually help package deliveries check on food to see if they’re overflowing with deliveries/mobiles. i help clean up after bar people & if they’re swamped with drinks i’ll help them out too.
