Rant about Drive Thru Window (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ZoucchiniLand
Does anyone else hate the drive thru window sequence? You give them their items then take their payment. Now I had been doing the opposite because

1) it was faster because people would just show up with their phone/card in hand and I wouldn’t have to scramble to put their items down and then take their payment (because honestly I find it would rude to insist I give them their things first, so I just go with their flow).

2) I would run into less problems when cashing them out. If I gave them their items first, then scanned their card, they would leave during that time and they would still owe a balance. Also, some people would straight up just leave after I have given them their items. Especially when I’m doing both DTO and DTR. I’ve had to void so many transactions because there’s nothing else I can do.

But my SM wants us doing it this way and it just bothers me because I don’t care if people get free Starbucks, but I hate it when I get in trouble for these mistakes happening.

We take payment and then pass out the items. I’ll start passing it out while the payment is processing. I stay in control of the whole process. When I was first starting out I had several transactions fail after they’d already driven away.

That sounds horrible. My store always takes payment before handing out items.

They say to do it the way your SM wants in Barista Basics but the issue is that the thoughtful customers are conditioned to be ready to pay when they roll up. They have their phone and/or card in their hands and are not ready to be handed anything. If we're going to be changing things up on them like this, we should tell them at the DTO. Why rush the DTO process? Greet them and let them know that when they reach the window we will hand them their order before they pay. Some of them will listen and have ready hands. Also, why not ask for food items first? Why not double check hot or iced and sizes? I don't think we're judged on how long DTO takes so why not make the effort to inform the customer of our changes and get it right? When we rush DTO customers do too and that's when you get additions or changes at the window that KILL DT times

Actually, 80% of the time I take payment first because I have no product to hand out anyway!

I try to hand off a drink as I take their card. If they’re paying with the app, I scan, then hand off. If cash, I take the cash then hand off if they have it ready, otherwise I hand out one thing, then take their money, then hand out the rest
