Unpopular Opinion, Starbs Edition (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by draahstopter
We are not dietitians. If you’re really that worried about how many calories you’re taking in and how much sugar, make your own coffee where you know for a fact what’s going in it. We can give you rough estimates (sometimes), but we can’t guarantee anything 90% of the time. Stop asking us for options for a super restricted diet! And stop getting mad at us for not knowing what to give you!!
SnooDonuts3398 328 points 2y ago
Unpopular opinion, we need to focus more on the grab and go model, and this job would be easier on most of us if the company just accepted that it’s fast food. It stopped being a coffee shop over a decade ago.
4filth 130 points 2y ago
thank you!!!!! like pick ONE i can’t give you this gilmore girls ass bestie fantasy and make 50 fucking drinks at the speed of light
IniciandoElHackeo 92 points 2y ago
I don't want it to be true. But it's true.
SnooDonuts3398 42 points 2y ago
Me either, but if that’s how they want to make their money 🤷🏻‍♂️
BabySteele 31 points 2y ago
Whenever anyone asks me how is Starbucks in Seattle (im in Greater Seattle Area), I tell them Starbs is like the McDonald's of coffee. Its fast, good n simple for what you want, but damn there is a lot better options out there
HollowRibcage 27 points 2y ago
Oh yeah, that reality hit me late whenever the manager or whomever she was (the lady above district position) said that she didn’t want us to repeat their order back to them or ask for food first. Apparently the district and her were arguing over that fact in our cafe- because for us our main customer connections happen when taking your order and they said that the customer connections will be happening at the window. But like. We all know once they get to that point we get them out as fast we can.
trashkittenxoxo 4 points 2y ago
they push that garbage and then wonder why connection scores are low and sales are still down. it's infuriating. you're actively telling me to give bad service, karen, that's why customers are hostile and don't want to give us money!
ObnoxiousR 2 points 2y ago
I would give you an award but ive seen your comment just after i awarded my reward to this post. Sorry but damn you are right
medusas-garden 248 points 2y ago
Whenever anyone asks me about anything related to the health content of anything we offer I tell them all our nutrition information is available on the app and we’re not trained to know or advise dietary recommendations
liz-can-too 47 points 2y ago
This right here is the answer. But, back in my barista days I wished we had a printed handout of the nutrition info for folks that may not be as tech inclined. Not the worlds biggest overlap of the customer groups who would want this info, BUT we are supposed to be top tier customer service, and this would have been SO easy and cheap. Small things make the difference.
trashkittenxoxo 3 points 2y ago
they change the recipes so often, how accurate could those printouts be?
real-3st 1 points 2y ago
They actually give new recipe cards digitally whenever they do so just having it on those would be easier. They spit them out like nothing afterall
StormTheParade 27 points 2y ago
Yeah this was always my stance. I can tell you what's got dairy in it and how the drinks are made recipe-wise but that's about it. I'm not your dietician, I'm not your calorie counter, I'm not your fitness trainer, I'm not a fucking doctor. If you need a drink with x amount of calories, y amount of carbs, and z amount of sugar *that's on you.*

Just like if someone has a deathly allergy to something, it's on them to know what they're ordering and to be aware of the risks. It's good to let people know, but at the end of the day, you are responsible for your health.
radpandaparty 2 points 2y ago
I told some lady that and she said, "Well I'm not on the app right now am I?"
ohhot-pot-ao 3 points 2y ago
My smart ass would've just replied, "neither am I so stop asking". God it's a good thing I don't work there anymore lol, only job I had that managed to seriously raise my blood pressure.
CLEf11 93 points 2y ago
Here's an unpopular opinion. People who are obsessed with getting their dog a pup cup annoy me. I don't mind if we're not super busy but when we are and they just sit there after getting their drinks and are like "umm the pup cup" no move on your dog will live without it and will actually probably be healthier since dogs shouldn't have dairy anywyay
DaybreakNightfall 30 points 2y ago
Or vanilla syrup
SM0LandANGR3Y 19 points 2y ago
We actually had a few of our regulars give their dog diabetes because they would literally come everyday for years 🤦🏽
CampLeo 3 points 2y ago
I'm not defending the pup cup thing. Don't take it that way. I'm just a big ol' biology nerd. Dogs very very rarely develop type 2 diabetes. It's more likely the dog had a different condition like Cushing's disease that lead to them developing diabetes. My own dog was diabetic as a result of long term prednisone use to treat her Addison's disease.
denahom-chikn 17 points 2y ago
we have someone who comes in and gets her dog a pup cup EVERY DAY
pleasesurpriseme 16 points 2y ago
This regular we used to have would be wide eyed, staring without blinking, bouncing up and down in her seat waiting for her pup cup every time. I swear she went for the pup cup more than her own drink. One day we were slammed and I was barring and soloing dt (pre covid!) and she literally yelled “dont forget my PUUUUUUP CUP” fuck off, Stacey. I stopped what I was doing to make it and hand it over, but girl you come three times a day and get one every time. Your dog is not looking very healthy or happy. Maybe find a new treat?
MemesandSpeech 15 points 2y ago
Don't you just LOVE when they be hollering at the bar and shrugging everyone just to get a simple pup cup like there dog's life is DEPENDENT IT ON IT! >:C
Ashesremindme 7 points 2y ago
The worst are the people who come through ONLY to get a pup cup. Like they don't order anything else.

I mean I get it if sometimes someone comes through just for an ice water. I've been on a long drive and feeling thirsty and just want water, and even more so when I have my kid in the car whining about being thirsty. I even understand when you've gotten your dog a pup cup before and now every time you go to Starbucks they expect one. But for crying out loud. Just a pup cup? Like, you weren't even coming here. You made a special stop to get your dog a pup cup.
FuschiaFeather 5 points 2y ago
*people who get their kids a pup cup and ask for a spoon with it
temporarynothings 4 points 2y ago
i only bring my pup home a pup cup on rare occasions. last time i remember it was her 9th birthday in march.
darthvulsa 2 points 2y ago
This is true: I’ve learned a lot from this after my dog got diabetes. It’s confounding how often people will roll through with the request for a pup cup. At my store we started using the smaller sample cups for these requests.
MemesandSpeech 82 points 2y ago
Customer: "Is the vanilla SWEET cream cold brew, SWEET?"

ME: Is the sun, HOT? -\_-
mrhammerant 33 points 2y ago
I had a guy yell (literally yell, voice raised, f-bombs) at me because his cold brew was cold.
sweet-seat 8 points 2y ago
one grande pike coming right up
FuschiaFeather 1 points 2y ago
I had the reverse yesterday when someone wanted their pikes iced. I assumed they meant a few ice cubes to cool it down but uh. Nope.

I had a lady mad because she ordered the salted caramel cold foam cold brew and it was salty…. I just don’t know what they want from us.
GirlGangX3 2 points 2y ago
Is the pope catholic . Lol
penis-ylvania 72 points 2y ago
Not to mention more than half the ingredients we use don’t even have a nutrition label
stratamaniac 66 points 2y ago
Dammit all I want is a gluten free vegan black coffee with 40 pumps of syrup.
jellysqueaks 64 points 2y ago
I had someone ask for a “surprise me” latte that was keto… I just rang him up for a heavy cream latte w SFV syrup. I can’t help but wonder if these substitutions are actually better for you than the original ingredients
Anxious_Database 110 points 2y ago
Whenever people ask for surprise me stuff I just tell them we can’t do that, they have to order something specific. I’m not gonna be responsible for some dumbass having an allergic reaction. One time this girl asked for a surprise me, I told her no but I can give a recommendation and I recommended the chocolate almond milk shaken espresso. This girl deadass said no I’m allergic to nuts. Like WHAT you wanted a surprise me drink but you have a NUT ALLERGY?
Kindly-Wear-6290 27 points 2y ago
Surprise me lattes are bad enough but it’s required you to have knowledge of keto, which at this point I wish I didn’t have. I try to talk people into whole milk with a splash of heavy cream because, you know, arteries. But also, I hate sugar free options so I’d just give them espresso and gross milk. Nothing else for them.
SelocAvrap 5 points 2y ago
I was always truthful with people. "To be honest, I don't get trained on what's keto. The only thing I know for sure is keto is our ice water, which is actually pretty good. So what can I get you?"
imathrowayslc 4 points 2y ago
They are not! If that was a grande it was over 1300 calories! It also still had 10 grams of carbs from the heavy cream.

jellysqueaks 8 points 2y ago
Jeez! Those “keto pink drinks” with HWC and vanilla bean powder make me cringe
Ordinary-Theory-8289 5 points 2y ago
There’s no way the vanilla bean powder is keto friendly. It has no sugar? Matter of fact strawberry açaí is definitely not keto either lol
jellysqueaks 2 points 2y ago
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I dunno. I think the “keto” one used passion tea but I have no idea about the powder. They tell me it’s keto and I ring them up
moon_light523 3 points 2y ago
I think someone said on this subreddit that the SFV isn’t keto friendly lmao
ObitoUchiha41 52 points 2y ago
I had someone ask what kinda fraps had low carbs the other day??

like I don’t mind helping people navigate the menu, it’s a food service job, that’s part of the deal, but what I know is ingredients and stuff like caffeine content and which options are sugar free. beyond that I’d have to look it up on the website which I don’t really want to do to further hold up a drive thru line.

if you have a specific request like that... y’all we live in 2021, please check the website first.
drinkliquidclocks 31 points 2y ago
Trying to explain to diet customers why a frap can't be sugar free is the bane of my existence. They don't listennn
noeyoureatowel 23 points 2y ago
And then they order an iced latte with heavy cream double blended and you have to scrape chunky fat-coated coffee ice goo out of the blender and question all of the choices in life that brought you to this moment
liz-can-too 13 points 2y ago
I think part of the problem is that back in the day there were “light” Frappuccino’s that DID use a sugar free frap base. It was discontinued not long after I left the siren, but I have friends who still ask for it.
C10ckw0rks 1 points 2y ago
It wasn’t sugar free, it was 4 grams less then the orginal base
liz-can-too 1 points 2y ago
Ah! Thanks for the correction :)
tigerlillyforu 3 points 2y ago
The fact that people don’t take initiative and look that stuff up themselves astounds me.
FfierceLaw 39 points 2y ago
$1 developed by a partner and shared on Reddit. It's really good
imathrowayslc 6 points 2y ago
Thanks for the shout-out!
idk-what-user-2pick 25 points 2y ago
My unpopular opinion: I honestly don't give a shit about our merchandise. Whenever my coworkers or customers get worked up about a new tumbler that just came out or whatever I honestly couldn't care less.
temporarynothings 10 points 2y ago
Same! I don’t get the big deal. I own a couple of tumblers but like, we get a discount so it was whatever. I have cheap tumblers that work so much better than the starbucks ones

Some people are hopelessly stupid. But hey, that’s capitalism!
MatchingColors 18 points 2y ago
Almost 100% of the time, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t get it.
imathrowayslc 16 points 2y ago
This is exactly why I made my website, I wanted to know. I know its not feasible for us to know and tell customers, but this may help:

$1

App version was submitted to google today and is pending review. For now if you bookmark it to your home screen it will also work when you don't have internet.
bitter-barista 1 points 2y ago
I love it, however it's missing hot white mochas of every size...=/
FuschiaFeather 1 points 2y ago
This is the most amazing thing also my favorite drink is less calories than I thought! Happy dance!
draahstopter [OP] 1 points 2y ago
You are amazing and have done a great service for us all. Bless you.
flavioTOBR 15 points 2y ago
Thankfully in Canada we have the calories put in the menus at the store.
cringeqween13 10 points 2y ago
People don't even look at the menu 90% of the time at my store
drinkliquidclocks 4 points 2y ago
I think in America we do as well...? I think OP is talking about custom drinks
flavioTOBR 4 points 2y ago
Oh I don’t know about the US. It’s just that in Ontario (at least) calories must be displayed on any menu that lists or depicts standard food items.
IniciandoElHackeo 14 points 2y ago
Unpopular with customers.
temporarynothings 10 points 2y ago
I had a woman ask me about the exact amount of carbs, sugars, fats, calories, etc in our drinks. When I told her we don’t memorize that info, she went ballistic. Told me she was on a diet and needed to know exactly what was in her drink. Proceeded to order a white mocha frappuccino.
anna_the_nerd 10 points 2y ago
I won’t lie, there was one time when I first got a bunch of restrictions on my diet and the person who took my order was way better than I would’ve imagined. This guy looked through all of the refreshers to make sure nothing had apples or peach because I was having really bad reactions to them. So sweet. It wasn’t busy, but he didn’t give me any crap and get huffy about it. However, I understand your point on this. I really didn’t think much of asking about it but now I realize how irritating that must be for you guys.
wanderer1522 20 points 2y ago
Working around allergies isn't an issue as long as you make sure to tell us what foods you can't have. The problem is when people come up and ask for something to be keto or vegan or whatever dietary choice they've made and expect us to know off the top of our heads what exactly that is and what to make for them.
temporarynothings 8 points 2y ago
Yeah, I have no problem accommodating for allergies/religious purposes. It’s when people come through and ask what we have that’s vegan, keto, etc that’s frustrating. I’m not vegan/vegetarian and I don’t do keto - and nobody at my store does, either. We all get stumped when we are asked for these drinks and food items. Besides I think you would know better about your dietary needs than I would anyways?
JeanLucPicardsAss 10 points 2y ago
Always let us know so we can get clean utensils, shakers, or blender to avoid cross contamination! We need to know to keep everyone safe, so its no problem to ask for options you won't have a reaction to. It's more when people ask for calorie counts, or DONT mention an allergy...
Optimistic-Donkey 8 points 2y ago
The keto bandits
Depressed_barista19 6 points 2y ago
How about this woman called and complained that we didn’t mention to her that passion tea had hibiscus flowers in it and she gets “migraines” from tea that has flowers. She said she was calling corporate and telling them we don’t know our ingredients and should all be fired. We said good luck with that ma’am
trashkittenxoxo 4 points 2y ago
"I'm so sorry, ma'am, but we as a policy cannot guarantee allergen information because everything is made on shared equipment. Unfortunately, your allergies are your responsibility. Have a good one!"
ianbz 3 points 2y ago
Starbucks is definitely the wrong place for hybrid health nuts and sweet fiends to be going to.
serialsquisher 2 points 2y ago
i straight up tell people that they need to look up the nutrition info online. we don’t have any of that info in my store, idk about others
trashkittenxoxo 1 points 2y ago
100% this! Even the official nutrition info is a GUIDE not a guarantee. Science is not that good and can't account for your personal body type and metabolism.
ryzzostar 1 points 2y ago
"All I want to know is if I get the coffee frappuccino made with heavy cream, sf cinnamon dolce, and 5 splenda, is it gonna be keto?"
-the same person about twice a week in DT with a different 'keto question'...
squishpolice 1 points 2y ago
also not gonna lie had a customer ask about calorie info for the breakfast sandwiches and as someone with an ED it was damn hard for me to acknowledge that sandwiches (that I’ve eaten before!) have calories? I felt really dumb for having trouble with it, and I definitely wish that customer had just looked it up on the app.

Them: what alternative milk do you recommend? Me: None, I don't drink alternative milk so I can't give you a decent suggestion as I find them all ummm, not good. Them: But if you DID? Which one would you recommend? Me: goat's milk. Them: Oh! Do you sell goat's milk? Me: No.... repeat on an endless loop...
HengroenAndLlamrei 29 points 2y ago
I was with you on the first part, but choosing a milk you don’t have when you know they are asking for a recommendation of milk you do have? Come on.

Just repeat what others have said. ‘I personally don’t drink alternative milks, but the oatmilk is very popular so that’s what I would suggest.’ Or anything else actually useful to get the customer out of line, which is the objective, not running in circles.
zzid2d21 3 points 2y ago
I was being sarcastic… I should have put a “/s”….
JeanLucPicardsAss 6 points 2y ago
We try to have everyone taste everything if they can, so we know how to answer these kinds of questions. I don't drink coconut milk, but I know when to suggest it because I know what it tastes like. Soy is unsweetened and creamy, coconut is sweetened and light but doesn't foam well, oat has a stronger taste than the others but foams great so I wouldn't put it in anything fruity, and almond milk goes well in pretty much anything even refreshers but does not foam nicely.
