Work Group Chats (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by philosopher_cat_lady
For those of you who have group chats at your store, have you had any issues with them, such as baristas texting everyone at 5 in the morning or bullying people on them? Mine is so negative that it's gotten to the point where I've deleted it three times now. (I'm not going back this time.) Latest motivation for deleting it--a message that read: "To whoever dropped a bottle of caramel drizzle under a counter and left it there to spill everywhere, your mom's a hoe." (We have a bunch of green beans, and it was likely one of them who did it. Great way to make them feel welcome, huh?)

The writer of this message has already been reported by me to my SM and DM for negativity, unprofessional behavior, and being mean for absolutely no reason. The reason for this post is to ask if there are clear guidelines, rules, or policies for work group chats at Starbucks.

While the comment about the caramel drizzle, i dont think that constitutes bullying. That's a reference to a vine, if your green beans are under 25 they most likely recognized if for what it was--a joke. If it makes you uncomfortable you're within your rights to leave but group chats arw a valuable form of communication.

I think it's a misogynistic joke and therefore a bad joke.
dicksoutforpoppunk 9 points 2y ago
I don't see how that comment is misogynistic tbh
Adventurous-Path-976 1 points 2y ago
That’s because it’s not lmao
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] -2 points 2y ago
The term 'hoe' is a misogynistic slur.
dicksoutforpoppunk 1 points 2y ago
Are you saying a man can't be a hoe? That's pretty sexist

...what

Work group chats are not approved forms of communication at Starbucks

They can be used if you want to, but they can’t be required or anything like that
StormTheParade 19 points 2y ago
I used to pay for my text messages. Told my manager if she wanted a group chat that i either had to be removed or everyone needed to move to WhatsApp/GroupMe.

Starbucks cannot require you to be a part of a group text chat or anything because they do not pay for our phones.
Huge_Crab_7425 12 points 2y ago
There is no policy or rules because group chats shouldn’t be a thing. Time worked is time paid.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 3 points 2y ago
This. It feels really good not being in the group chat because I can disconnect from Starbucks when I'm not there. And the lack of regulation over a group chat is a concern to me

My personal guideline, if you keep normal hours, that is, if you sleep at night, turn off notifications. It's easy on IOS. Do this especially if you are an opener. We have an opener who complains about late night messages and I don't know why she doesn't just turn it off. Sometimes a partner on mids gets sick at night and needs to try to find coverage for a shift that starts in 12 hours
spacebrain420 2 points 2y ago
For me it's because I have to have my phone on all night for possible family emergencies. So getting notifications about Carmel drizzle dropped at midnight when I'm trying to sleep are pretty annoying when can't just turn it off.
bigbadbuns 7 points 2y ago
You can set individual conversations to do not disturb
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] -2 points 2y ago
The number of times I've been woken up by that damn app...
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] -2 points 2y ago
I've turned off notifications before. But then I can't know when somebody's posted something, so I have to remember to check the app. Another option is to silence your cell phone every night, but I personally don't remember to.

Are none of y'all friends together because that's such a bland statement to report someone over, and is almost as petty as reporting someone for batch blending fraps. But we keep our work chats to just night crew, and keep out the people we don't like.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I didn't report the shift supervisor for writing that message.
springbreak32563 1 points 2y ago
I miss Interpreted your post by my point still stands by you mentioning it makes it seem like you are complaining about a small statement. Just like we are less likely to take a customers complaints seriously if they complain about something that doesn't matter. But humor is ultimately subjective so it's whatever.

that’s a reference to a vine, a student throws a paper ball and the teacher says “whoever threw that paper, your mom’s a hoe”. the person probably meant nothing by it and was trying to be funny
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I do appreciate y'all telling me that, I didn't know the joke was a reference
impasse602 3 points 2y ago
I ignore all my group chat messages 🤷🏼‍♂️
fuzzypeaches-0 3 points 2y ago
My DM is very big on time worked=time
paid so we aren't allowed any group chats, we have a facebook group so you can easily turn off notifications and check when you feel like it (or not join at all!) and it has to be only positive things! Starbucks has a no retaliation policy (& a ton of other policies) that prevent partners from being allowed to make nasty comments etc. without being written up. You can ask your SM to look into them for you! I hope that helps a bit❤️
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yesterday, my SM did an impromptu staff meeting. She said our group chat should only be used to swap shifts.
jupiter_bug 1 points 2y ago
If you didn't like the meme, you could have talked to the person first before reporting them.
4filth 2 points 2y ago
the post clearly states they reported them for something they did before that message
jupiter_bug 1 points 2y ago
I misread then. But even so, I think its better to talk to the person you have an issue with before reporting them.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I'm not sure if I agree. I think it can be more effective to have an unbiased third party mediate the issue.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That's true, but I don't feel safe talking to them ever since they yelled at me one day for no reason after they were an hour late opening the store. I have contacted them before asking them to add me to the group chat--they're the only one who can--and letting them know they shorted me $5 in my tip bag. They didn't add me to the group chat and they didn't respond to me. As for the joke in the group chat, I felt a much better solution was just leaving the group chat rather than talking to them about it after my SM has already talked to them about similar behavior.
