today some entitled old man told me he was “going to call the police” because i uphold the refill policy (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by casualdemon
look, i’ve been in this game for wayyyy too long, and i know how to choose my battles. i have no qualms giving in to customer demands, because i do not give a fuck about this company and i don’t have the emotional energy to argue with the privileged adult-babies that are the majority starbucks customers over a few cents. all that being said, man...sometimes i just can’t help being a smart-ass.

this dude is well known in my store because he’s an A S S H O L E. he likes to cause a scene and make people uncomfortable! in retrospect, i think he may me a narcissist but i guess that’s besides the point...moving on. he comes in for a pound of beans and orders his usual; a tall coffee in a venti cup with whip to the top. he’s patronizing as fuck when he orders, which is to be expected, but i don’t really take kindly to men in suits who talk to me like i’m a child. after that, i was kind of an asshole. i just didn’t play the whole customer service ass kissing thing. it didn’t surprise to hear he complained to a barista that “i was acting too important to give him a handle bag,” but it did annoy me. all in all, i know the transaction could have gone worse and i was happy he came and left relatively quietly.

fast forward and hour or so, he’s back. i’m so annoyed because i already know his schtick. he’s obsessed with “The Starbucks Refill.” i’ve been with this company for over seven years. i have literally signed documents stating that i understand and will adhere to the refill policy. now, like i said before, i don’t have qualms about giving someone something on the cheap. like, it literally doesn’t effect me. however, if someone is consistently an asshole, i’m not gonna help them out. mind you, this particular customer has been “reminded” of starbucks’ refill policy on many occasions. each time he throws a tantrum and threatens to call corporate. 🙄 i was so not in the mood for his shit today, and there just so happened to be a new hire on register so i used him as a teaching moment.

he proceeded to order a refill from the green bean. i looked him dead in his eyes and said, “sir, i know you’ve been told multiple times what our refill policy is. you came and went, if you want another coffee we have to charge you full price.” he started having a hissy fit and told me that “he shouldn’t have to even pay for a refill because he dropped his first coffee all over his car.” i told him, “look, i know you come in here and try to get free refills all the time and cause a scene when we charge you and honestly, i don’t believe that you spilled your first drink.” like, i know i shouldn’t have gone there but DUDE this man is such a fucking prick. i truly couldn’t help myself!!

well, as you can imagine this pissed him the fuck off. he asked me if i wanted to “see the stain.” i thought about it for like a second and decided yes, sir, i do want to see the stain. i literally walked out the door, and looked in his stainless car. i was like okay, i’m going back inside like if you want to buy your coffee you can come and pay full price. and THAT is when he threatened to call the police on me lmfao. i was like, “you’re going to call the police on what...”

man, I KNOW it was stupid of me to fucking fight and argue with this stupid dude. i know i might even get written up for it!! but in the moment it felt so good not to bend over and take it, and to call this fucker out!!! anyway, i’m gonna wrap this up with some advice. quit your shitty starbucks job and join a fucking cult!!!

Lol, I hope you don't get in too much trouble. Some people want to abuse the system and get away with it too long because as soon as someone starts to complain, they get free stuff and recovery cards.

One time I was on Solo drive and this lady rolls up to the speaker in a Mercedes SUV and says she wants a free refill on her iced tea. I told her that free refills are only for dine in customers, but I'd be happy to get her an iced tea at full price. She doubled down and said that she had called and spoken to someone who told her she could get a free refill in the drive thru. I looked at all my partners who were listening and all their faces had the same wtf look so I said, "I'm not sure who you spoke with, but that isn't company policy and we can't do a free refill in drive thru." She begrudgingly orders a new iced tea with a few more snarky comments about us needing to train people better thrown in, and comes up to the window.

I open it up with a cheerful hey how are you, and she fixes me with her most powerful Karen stare. Now, I am not intimidated by Karens. I am a 45 year old woman, I have 3 kids, and I've been through enough shit in the past few years that your saltiness over having to pay a few bucks for tea from the comfort of your Mercedes does not phase me. I keep up the cheer and take her payment and hand her the tea. She makes a point of looking at my name tag and says, "are you the manager, ASHES??" I just said, "nope! 😊. Have a great day!" And closed the window. Lol.

People are so silly aren’t they? It just makes you laugh and laugh. Or at least I do.. right to their entitled bitchy faces. a man came in with his own mug. And so I gave him the discount. he was furious. He said he should only have to pay 40¢ because he brought in his own mug. and I laughed and said. It would have been free if you brought your own coffee too.. he threw his money at me. I gave him his change the same way and laughed that annoying customer service laugh and told him to have a day.

Nah I do the same thing. Idc if I get in trouble. I don’t get paid enough to be bullied by adult children.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the refill policy?

Edit: also he sounds like a douche and I'm so sorry you have to deal with that prick

It's that if you want a free refill, you have to stay at the store until you get the refill. Otherwise you'd just have people keeping their cup from 2007 saying they were in earlier and just want a free refill. I believe you also have to be a rewards member for the free refill, otherwise a refill is 50 cents.

Thank you!! I didn't even know this was a thing! I will definitely be trying that next time I have an extra long study sesh at my nearest Starbucks!!

Also, just so you know, you can only get a refill of certain things. Your first drink can be whatever you want but the refill can only be regular iced coffee, brewed coffee, iced or hot tea, and maybe one or two other things. So no getting a second caramel macchiato for free hahaha
Soapy_burger 4 points 2y ago
Good to know! I'm pretty boring and usually only get plain iced coffee 😅

Over the 2020 holidays, I had a middle aged man threaten to call the cops because I didn’t put the caramel drizzle the way “the other one” does it. Super upsetting at first but with customers laughing at him when we apologized..it was just overall silly and stupid. People are wierd.

I wish my store would actually follow this, we have people that come and order their coffees, tea, ice coffee and cold brew and leave the store and then come back few hours later for their refills. When I told one of this customers about the actual policy she throw a temper tantrum, call my store manager, the ssv that was in charge and told them I was being rude and charging her full price for her refill. When I told my SM about the policy she went and told me I was wrong and to read it again or do training again. I refused and she gave me a verbal warning, so now every time that customer come I lock my till and have someone else ring her up. I can’t stand her obnoxious voice.

Just found out the other day, at a Cafe store you can refill any cup with a tea or coffee regardless of the drink they got before (i.e. the guy got a Trenta SA Refresher and then asked for a green tea)
casualdemon [OP] 1 points 2y ago
that’s true for all stores! you can get a refill of hot or iced coffee or tea for $.53 (or free for rewards members) no matter what the first beverage was. however, you must stay in the store to qualify for refill price.
