outside shift hires (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Adorable_Track_827
I 100% do not understand why people get hired as shifts before they are baristas. the only exception would be if a store is absolutely drowning and they neeeedd someone badly. my sm recently hired an outside shift when it wasn’t needed and it’s been a rollercoaster so far. I feel like they should’ve at least been hired as a barista for a couple months before bumped up.

I feel as though you should not be a shift leader if your baristas have to teach you the things shifts typically teach them. not at all am i saying they shouldn’t be hired but they should just be hired as a barista for at least 2 months before being made a key holder.

They actually just had a training module that talked about exactly this. They really aren't supposed to hire outside the company for promotions anymore. It specifically listed that you're supposed to be a barista 6 months before your eligible to be promoted to shift. Unless no one in your store qualifies, this is some sketchy business. If you haven't done that training module I would, and then bring up your concerns/the training module to your SM/DM, because they are legitimate concerns.

LOL, now imagine that but with your manager.

I’ve trained 3/4 of the managers I’ve had. It’s so infuriating, especially when they start thinking they’re better than you after the first week.

No better way to plummet store morale quickly than by bringing in an outside hire shift lead IMO.

I was hired as a SSV in 2017 and I have been an SM since 2019. It can work. But I definitely agree that it can be frustrating from a barista’s perspective.

Also, now that I’m an SM, I definitely think that a barista being promoted to a shift is much more set up for success than a newly hired SSV.

Basically it’s impossible to hire full time responsible adults at barista pay. Most shift are in college at my store and everyone over 25 has another full time job.

i’m an outside hire ssv. got hired a couple of months ago. if you find someone with good management experience (i’m 18 with shift asm and gm experience) and that learns super fast like myself, why would you pass up on a great manager that you can train to be a baristas in a couple of weeks?(i learned everything and became strong in 3 weeks)instead you want a internal promotion which causes even worse managers cause most people aren’t capable of being a leader.
