DM was in our store Wednesday and decided another visit would be great today too 🙃 I was put on a lunch just as he came in so was spared from most feedback, but my SSV was clearly stressed and annoyed. I get back from lunch and SSV tells me to pull cold brew, SM says we're too busy to have me doing that, but we're completely out of cold brew, so I pull it and make kegs. By the time I'm done, we're still a mess, but so are dishes and trash, so I spend the rest of my shift doing dishes, trash run, and checking bathrooms. Since I wasn't on the floor, my SSV couldn't get her lunch, per guidance of SM and DM. When I left, along with the rest of morning shift, the only people on the floor were a green bean on register and SSV on bar, DM was still in the store talking to SM. My SSV is supposed to be off soon and has yet to get a lunch.
Not really sure what the point of this post was, other than DMs really shouldn't be getting on our backs about customer connections when we're clearly understaffed and other things need to be getting done. I usually like working, even if we're in a rush and understaffed, but throw in a DM visit and suddenly the SM and SSV are frazzled and the whole shift just becomes a mess.

Ugh that’s shitty. I’ve heard horror stories of our DM trying to hop in and help when they’ve visited during rushes. Mind you our DM was an outside hire and had no idea how to do anything at retail level. Like thanks but please just get out of the way and leave us be lol

so many DMs haven’t been baristas in YEARS and don’t understand the struggle we go through as baristas. their comments hurt especially because of what we already have on our plate 🙄

The crazy thing is this is a newly promoted DM who was an SM just a few months ago, so it feels even more annoying that he has these unrealistic expectations for us
engmajor235 6 points 2y ago
that’s insane. i wonder if starbucks is the only food chain where district managers belittle their already beaten down workers. we get it enough from the customers we don’t need them to add onto it
chichichja87 7 points 2y ago
not the only chain! at the fast-food restaurant i used to work at, we were allowed to mark out a meal either at the end of our shift or during our 30 minute meal break if we wanted to. it could be anything within reason. well, my dm came in and had the AUDACITY to change the policy to that you could choose one of four options for a meal to have during your break and no more marking out food at the end of your shift. and he announced it with a poster that said “as a sign of appreciation for all your hard work, our new food markout policy is this.” it was ridiculous

The fkn AUDACITY what the hell?

Reminds me of all the health care workers who got an “appreciation meal” from their work because of their insane hours during COVID, and wound up arriving at that “appreciation meal” to a sad greenish hot dog in a white bread bun. No sides.

Some DMs have never even worked for Starbucks! It’s crazy.

My DM was literally fired for time theft. I don’t respect any of them and def give no fucks how things look to them.

My first ever bux SM *and* DM were both fired for shaving hours from partners. This was over a decade ago but it seems nothing has changed
UnusualCanary 2 points 2y ago
Can you elaborate on what you mean by shaving hours? Just curious if this is happening at my store.
ladytaters 1 points 2y ago
This was back in 2008, but I imagine it still happens.

The SM would go through punches and edit them. Say you clocked in at 7:55? She changed it to 8:00. You clocked out at 3:08? Changed to 3:00. It's just a few minutes here and there, but it adds up. After the SM was fired, the bux had to compensate partners for the time they'd worked and not been paid. One girl got a check for nearly $900, because so much of her time had been shaved and thus stolen. The DM was fired as well because she knew what the SM was doing and encouraged it.

Yeah. DM visits tend to stress out everyone in the store. SMs like to overstaff those days, and put on a show, and anyone who's trying to promote goes over the top to try to impress the DM. Everyone is just trying not to do anything stupid in front of the DM.

If we did things the way our DM told us too, we’d have 20 minute drive times and nothing done

is not getting a 30 min lunch after a certain amount of hours even legal???
