Help me understand why my old little cafe had the new machines and my new busy ass DT has the old ones!!
PsychologicalShelf 40 points 2y ago
Literally same! Every 5 seconds they want to rinse and randomly doesn’t pour shots. I know I pressed that m’fucking button -.-
WingsofFlight 12 points 2y ago
OMG THIS
dazedandconfusedhere 21 points 2y ago
The dt is old enough to not have been built with the M2s so it’s last in line for the new ones 🥲
KarluhO 9 points 2y ago
The store is literally a year and a half old, and we had m2s pre covid at my old store. I hate it so much lol

My store is having ours break down entirely once a week and get a work order in. We're begging for a new one. Not even an M2, just a new machine! Nope! It costs more than work orders every fucking week I guess 🙄
Alefur 16 points 2y ago
Our blonde machine has broken down pretty bad today, we just had someone here to fix it, it turned back on, and right after the guy left it turned back off and wont turn back on. Fun times. New machines when? Never.
SuperScientest1 29 points 2y ago
Pro tip: press rinse then immediately pull the grounds drawers out a little then put it back in. The machine will consider itself fully rinsed. Will save you so much
Sparklingghost 1 points 2y ago
This will cause grounds to fill up inside the machine and will mess with calibration. Had to call this in twice and that’s what I was told.
SuperScientest1 0 points 2y ago
Yeah I was told the same thing before so I only use this strategy sparingly in emergency situations and I make sure to fully rinse it afterwards
idk-what-user-2pick 1 points 2y ago
Iirc this isn't good for the machines. I forgot why but that's what I was told lol 🤷🏻‍♂️
cabbagescraps 26 points 2y ago
the mastrena 1 will always haunt my dreams, but i’ll forever miss being able to steam milk while my grounds drawer is full
kaelyxm 16 points 2y ago
Oh my god it’s a habit for me to always just press rinse no matter what
cyan_reynolds 11 points 2y ago
I miss the old machines, tbh. There's a couple nice features of the new ones but almost everything that matters most is worse imo.
kouki_cowboii 9 points 2y ago
my ptsd has me press rinse every time I pass so it’s always ready lmao

Am I old that whe I worked at the bucks I used this machine? This was the best (Used it around 2003-2005) Not the exact model as it had a timer on each pod, had 6 and I was able to tell it to do half shots. We had to get the grounds just right and every few hours make sure it is grinding the beans correctly on a manual grinder on the side

$1

That’s the machine I worked on as well (2000-2004). I never worked on the newer automatic machines I see in Starbucks these days, but let me tell you, these old machines were SO much faster. I could bang out 10 drinks in like 90 seconds despite having to grind, tamp, and empty my own portafilters.
eagle6705 8 points 2y ago
Dude I feel ya, and a lot of our regulars loved the taste. Using it took real talent. Sure they got some talented kids working but let's throw them on this for a bar test lol
violentfemme17 5 points 2y ago
We’re talented in a different way I think. Really skilled at cramming as much sugar into a single drink as possible and still managing to call it coffee in some form.
scissor_get_it 3 points 2y ago
Yep, it was really like an art form. Watching a talented barista bang out shots manually during an afternoon rush used to be a thing of beauty. Plus we had to mark the cups ourselves with those grease pencils! Nowadays it feels like it takes forever to get my drinks. I’m sure standards have changed in the past 20 years, but it almost feels like they now need to steam the milk individually for every single drink. Otherwise I have no idea what takes so long.
summersoonfelt 8 points 2y ago
Thats because we do have to steam milk individually for each drink, I never knew you could steam more milk than that
AndrewtheRey 1 points 2y ago
I worked in a concession stand that had lattes and we had those machines, but the espresso came in pods
morwen538 1 points 2y ago
God I miss working with those. We had them when I worked at Tully's and at a little cafe. Definitely had better control and loved it so much more than ANY automatic machine
wifeypoopoo 8 points 2y ago
Old machines here 🙋🏼‍♀️ they're the worst
holypolina 4 points 2y ago
I honestly love these machines but hate that they only have blonde or decaf not both like the new ones :(
WingsofFlight 3 points 2y ago
This is me every time I am at work.
ZerxisYinten 2 points 2y ago
Tbh if you still have the old machines I’d slide night crew some tips to break it on their way out.
sadvibez_x 2 points 2y ago
i’m so glad the new ones aren’t like this
uwumoment 1 points 2y ago
so you’re telling me we have the option of having new machines?!?! my store has been struggling lately and they should honestly just invest in new technology but then they’d have to train people and we all know how that usually goes
No_Yogurt_4602 1 points 2y ago
...are there new machines where that isn't the case
EmployerPersonal7903 1 points 2y ago
Press rinse, pull out the grinder drawer enough for it to notice, wait for it to register and put it back it In and go :) skips the rinse cycle.
Ashesremindme 1 points 2y ago
I feel like every time I come in and take over for someone on bar, I almost immediately:

-have to empty grounds

-have to change the keg (and usually there isn't a spare in the fridge)

-have to change at least 3 syrups or frapp roast

Every dang time. To be fair I usually come in just after peak so I get why everything is running out, but it's always like the perfect storm to start me off behind.
loki8675309 1 points 2y ago
