becoming a trainer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by daisy-trbl
so my sm talked to me about becoming a trainer and apparently they want me to officially start training someone in 2 weeks 😳

i have no clue what i’m supposed to do my thought process is to just be what i would’ve like to have had when i first started since i didn’t really have a trainer. but are there any things you would recommend

trainers: what do you like to start with? what should i focus on?

everyone: what would you like to have had from your trainer (if you had one)?

You’re going to have a print out, it will have scheduled parts of training you will need to cover to make it easy on you!

I like to start with teaching the register. At that spot you get to find out how comfortable they are with the menu, what they know about espresso drinks. Since they don’t know how the drinks are made, show them they can ring up the drink and look at the contents on the side of the screen to help them. I like to quiz them on taking orders, and then follow all the other stuff. Try to be open, and encourage for them to ask questions and talk to other baristas.

I personally wish someone introduced me to some of the some of the staff right away so I could ask them questions. A good way to incorporate that is to ask the partners to quiz your trainee on weird drinks when they’re more comfortable with POS. Have them take actual costumer orders but stand right next to them for it.

Everything else should be easy to follow. But for when you teach them bar, have them make their own drink size/pumps/espresso chest sheet and encourage them to use it till they’re comfortable not to.

Good luck!!

Everyone in the comments already gave all the awesome answers so I’ll just add two things that I would ALWAYS start with.

1) I introduce the newbie to the team. They’ll probably be nervous in a new environment, so getting them familiar with everyone helps ease them in.

2) I give a big speech about how important it is to ASK QUESTIONS.
Whenever you have a question, ask it. If it’s something you asked before and forgot, ask again. Did you forget something you just asked me 5 minutes ago? Ask me again!

I like to emphasize that the only way to not suck is to learn, and to learn means asking questions. I also tell them that I’d prefer spending 10-30 seconds answering a question rather than spending 10-30 minutes fixing a mistake they made because they were too afraid to ask. That seems to make sense to a lot of people.

There is a full training guide on the Ipad to pair with BB and tells you the expected things you are to teach.

I had the same question and got some great answers in this post^

I decided to start with a thorough store walk through to know where everything is in the backstore, then walk through the restock stations in the front and had the green bean go find what we needed to fill since we just saw where it all was. It felt like a smooth transition and since new hires will start mostly as pos/cs its really helpful if they can find whatever they need on their own to complete a task.

Please remind them that asking questions is encouraged and that even experienced baristas had questions for each other all the time. Nobody can retain ALL the info so don't let them stress about trying to.

your SM should put you through the Barista Trainer Certification prior to you actually training anyone.
