Question about time off (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by shanswen
I requested time off for the 4th of july a month in advance and my manager denied it. I’ve already bought expensive tickets to something and truly won’t be able to go in. Could i get written up for calling out? My manager says that they need me there but there are other shift managers that have said they are available for the fourth so i don’t see the problem.

Ask another shift to cover there is no reason they cant. If your manager says no demand a reason other than “I need you” thats bs

While I agree that it's silly and if someone else can cover the shift you should do that, managers don't actually need a reason to deny time off. It's at their discretion. I will say that you have plenty of time to get the shift covered and should definitely do that.

Try to see if someone else can cover for you since there are shift leaders who are available. If not then just call off, managers always try to pull that “we need you” crap.

Managers are allowed to deny time off requests for any reason, or no reason at all. I would try to find someone else to cover the shift. There's probably at least 1 person willing to swap or cover for you.

You can be written up for calling out. You also don’t know how many other people have requested off for July 4th before you did so it may not be an Keyholder issue but also a floor coverage issue. If when the schedule comes out and you can find someone to cover your shift, it shouldn’t be a problem. But it’s important to remember that your time off requests can always be denied, especially on holidays, so don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
