Is Starbucks a good place to work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chronicallydead
I’m about to turn 16 and I’m wondering if it’s a good place to work. It’s close to my house so it’s one of the places I want to apply too. Thanks

For a high schooler, it isn’t bad! I worked there as a teenager and loved it. I did not love it when I returned after college. Compared to other fast food places, it’s pretty nice and you leave smelling like coffee instead of fries which personally was a big thing for me lol. Good luck!

I second this.

I worked there part time after quitting my full time as a project manager to go back to grad school, and it was physically much harder than my desk job but I really didn’t mind it. I think if it’s something you do for under 2 years it’s probably not bad or during college. I’m sure other people have different opinions as retail is just brutal overall. Perks I liked were free Spotify, COFFEE, and lunch.

But really, I just love coffee.

Free Spotify?
Coffee-Bae 8 points 2y ago
Yes, Starbucks partners get free Spotify premium.
We also get stock in the company if you are hired by November (I think its November don't quote me on that)
And you get more stock every year you are employed.

If you average 20 hours a week you can get health/vision/dental insurance, mental health benefits and a bunch of other things.
They also have a college plan that I am taking advantage of.

As a first job there are a lot of benefits.

Yep just got mine a few weeks ago. Great perk.

Yeah at least when I worked there 🤷🏻‍♀️

I got a second job at the bux for health insurance and I loved it pre pandemic. There was a buzz about the cafe and the customers were so nice and I actually become good friends with a lot of them. Post pandemic is obvious that corporate is trying to cut costs to put the money they lost of the last year back in their pockets.

It definitely depends on who you ask! Hahaha but in my experience it has been mostly great.

The team you get and the team dynamic definitely plays a strong part in whether or not it’s enjoyable to work, but it’s a great experience to have, in my opinion.

I will add though, that if you start working in a restaurant as a host, eventually you can become a server and you will probably make 2x what you make at Starbucks.

Is the schedule pretty consistent in your experience?
MatchingColors 5 points 2y ago
That definitely is situational. Totally depends on your availability, your store manager, your store’s needs, etc.

I can tell you that my schedule is 95% consistent and I work 40 hours a week.
KJ2998SJ 3 points 2y ago
No. Not at all unfortunately. You do get to put in your availability so you can choose when you want to be able to work, but the more you narrow it down, the less hours you get. I want as many hours as I can get, so my time is basically all day everyday, but that means that I'm scheduled all over the place.
chronicallydead [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I’m ok with less hours because I usually have stuff going on so I want to be able to plan around work

I just started working at Starbucks recently. It’s honestly been a ton of fun and my coworkers are amazing, but I do sometimes hear horror stories about other locations. It can be a really, really great experience, but if you end up with a shit store it’s probably not worth it.
LuissaMartinez 5 points 2y ago
If you like fast paced and your shift leads and co workers are good and fun then yes
Depressed_barista19 4 points 2y ago
It honestly depends on the crew and manager

Free Spotify, they pretty much pay for college if you use the program (which I do if you want information on that), chance for growth not just in the retail company but internationally, I know for most younger people the insurance doesn’t seem a big deal but it is too and it’s for part time and full time employees, I’ve had government benefits and benefits from a top 5 airline and these are better so far.
I will not sugar coat it though. You are expected to hold the brand motto of making a third safe space for all people, thinking the best before judging people, and giving them a chance to return to safe when they go too far. It’s going to be a job not a fun and free way of collecting a paycheck while just goofing off like most of my thankfully former coworkers here thought, and if your management in your region is horrible it will not get better quickly. Management seems to be my biggest issue, in that it’s not held to a proper standard across the board.
But it is a good company to work for, and I’ve worked for a lot of industries. I do recommend it to friends, and strangers alike. The college program is honestly one of the best for me, but that depends on your learning methods and degree sought.

I might be interested in the college program, I want to be a veterinarian when I’m older
zambiers 3 points 2y ago
It’s descent. As a 17 year old working part time, you want about 12-16 hours to 1) have enough money and 2) not feel over worked. Depending on where you live, you ask for 4 hour shifts (which is not bad)

no

Yeah if it’s a part time high school job I suppose, but not if you’re doing it to make a living
