not sure what to do here. we have absolutely no accountability within our store from shifts to the store manager. Our store is infested. and i mean INFESTED with fruit flies and gnats. It’s come to the point where as an opening barista, we have to swat them away with clipboards and pour hot water down the drains. is there some sort of health thing to deal with these fruit flies. no matter how much i tell the sm during conversation, nothing happens. it’s disgusting and i’m embarrassed to be working at the store.

definitely would contact your dm and let them know you have tried to get all your managers attention and it’s not being resolved

Ah. I used to work in a store like this. One thing that helps with the gnats is keeping your sani rags and used mop heads stored in a bag in bin with a lid. As far as shitty managers go, i second speaking to your DM about the matter

Couple of options, but probably beyond your paygrade and it needs motivated people. A call can be made for pest control to visit, but only so much they can do (although I think our store had overnight treatments done before).
Otherwise, when I was closing (or had barista friends closing on other nights), we'd do a specific cleaning regiment to avoid the issue. The walls near cold bar would get wiped down with sanitizer and syrup bottles rinsed off (so basically no overnight sugar). We'd clean the drains near bar with cleaner (I think I need to officially say cream cleanser, but restroom was definitely not used at all since that's not allowed officially), then flush it with buckets of sani + hot water (one of each normally). We'd then leave ice in the drains overnight, both at the floor and in the sink to ensure flies couldn't easily come back up.
After repeating this daily for a week, it definitely got better but if you neglect the store, it goes back to being bad.

Your SM should be having conversations with your SSVs and helping them with a plan. There is routine cleaning that should be done in every part of the day to help reduce the bug problem. It's your SSVs job to delegate cleaning tasks to baristas, and make sure baristas are doing the cleaning correctly and at the right times. It's your SMs job to make sure that the SSVs make sure the cleaning gets done. And if you don't see that happening it's time to contact your DM.

Sammeee but mine is fungus flies, the under part of our sink is all rotted wood and we have flies like crazy. (I work at a licensed store not for Starbucks) but I've complained to tons of ppl all the way up to DM and nobody cares 😀 it's disgusting especially in summer

Might be the mats if you have them. If floors and drains are done before closing and the water is sitting in the underside of the mats with the crumbs and drips from the rest of the day, that will create fungus (among us, haha SORRY I had to 😆). I see drains and floors get done a lot during mid and then closers just sweep & mop over the mats and they’re literally disgusting by the next day from all the bacteria buildup from milks and syrups. 🤢

Idk what "mats" are we don't have those. Our under counter is all wood and it's the same counter as when we opened in 2001 <3

The mats we have are just black, heavy duty Anti fatigue floor mats. Too bad you don’t have them because they save our feets on that concrete floor we have.

You should have pest control by Ecolab or another professional service and if let them know (call the local rep directly if you have a number - if not submit a ticket) and they’ll bring you a solution and bottle specifically to spray the drains with just before you exit after closing. Works like magic! Another remedy is plain white vinegar. Put in spray bottle and spray inside and around all drains and sinks at the same time as you’d use the other stuff before leaving at night. Works almost as well! And it’s super cheap. Good luck 🍀
