Help with a barista accusing people of racism(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Due-Tea-2916
Throw away account due to fear of being found. I have a partner at my store who is just not great. Slow on every position and messy. She has been her since last October and still doesn't know basic drink recipes and has to ask basic things like how many pumps in a grande etc. She seems to hate work and basically works 2 days a week (she gets the rest of her shifts covered). Basically, everyone else has to pick up her slack. She's on warming? Someone had to run food for her. She's on cs? Someone has to brew coffee for her. Everytime anyone tries to just ask her to, you know, do her position she complains to the shift on duty about how everyone is racist against her because she's one of the 10 people of color at our store. No one has an issue with anyone else beyond normal barista pettiness as far as I know, but she's created an environment where NO ONE can critique her on anything or she cries racist. Dt times tanking cuz she's slow on warming? You're racist. You're literally out of iced venti cups and she's on cs? You're a racist. It's creating such an awkward shift every I work with her because I feel like if I even ask "hey is that ds bacon on the way?" I get complained about harassment later. Last I heard the dm was involved but nothing ever came from that. I'm terrified of being accused of being racist. I don't want to get fired but mostly, that's just not who I am. What the hell do I do?

It’s situations like this that help me appreciate my store.

Makes me wish I was in a whole other district 🙄

We had a partner like this. Document everything and report.

Just report it to your dm. As a shift I wouldnt want to be within a mile of this nor would your manager. Dont get paid enough to tell someone “stop playing the race card”

1 of 10 people of color…I mean, I don’t know how large your team is, but that’s a good number of POC! If she was the only POC I guess I could maybe understand her wantin to blame things on race. But the store is diverse. She can’t really hide behind the race card here. I would report it to management. Sounds like someone that doesn’t want to work and just wants to use to current state of things (race relations being a HUGE hot button topic of conversation in the last year) to her advantage.

We have maybe 25ish partners? Our manager is also half African American. Last I heard she went above the sms head to our (white as hell) dm, and after that I've been told nothing and it's just been a consistently uncomfortable work environment.

Sounds like a lazy partner who wants to play the race card to avoid deserved critiscms 🤷🏽♀️

I feel like that's exactly what's happening, but she's winning 😔 we have POC, lgbtq+ partners, partners with disabilities, and we all work together great and hangout. But the bux is so terrified of a lawsuit they're probably gunna tell us to deal with her lazy ass and deal with it.

Are there any shift leads you feel comfortable talking to, or more than one? Tell them your concerns, because clearly shes the one harassing other employees. If they keep an eye on her work and leave notes (as they should) for the manager of work not being done/ unfriendly behavior toward other coworkers and so on, the manager can deal with her (with proof that its about the WORK). You can't be the only one who sees this and its really frustrating to have a coworker who's impossible to work with. Hope the rest of your team is great

Can your manager reduce her shifts? Partners that have “room for growth” usually get limited hours until they show improvement or move on to a different opportunity elsewhere.

Wow I had to read through all of the comments to make sure this wasn’t my store. I’m a shift with a similar situation. Luckily they are a closer and I’m an opener so our interactions are limited but it definitely is creating a harsh environment for the team to work in and for ya shifts to be able to coach

I’m a former barista but that happened in my district. My SM was black and had to go terminate a partner who would constantly throw the race card around for any little criticism. Said barista was untimely, lazy, took breaks much longer than the 10, and pretty much sounds like your girl. The difference is that her SM and SSV’s documented everything and filled out anonymous incident reports and the DM (white lady) tried intervening and the other barista called corporate with the same race card crap. Thankfully, corporate had record of everything and my SM had to go play “token black girl” (her words) and terminate her alongside the other SM to try and “eliminate bias”. It may be a long journey but if your DM and SM are proactive about this, you can kick her to the curb.
My advice is if she personally tries to accuse you even if it clearly isn’t racism, file an incident report on the iPad anonymously
