Cant get sat/sun off to drive to my brothers graduation- how do i tell my boss i wont be coming in? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blurredspace
So im a new sbucks worker(im in germany btw hello :) ) im still a trainee, know all the drinks though and am on register most shifts too. Last week i asked my boss if i could change the schedule for the 18/19/20 since id have to drive to a different state to go. He really wants me there. My boss said no. I said ok but my brother almost cried when i told him today so i texted her again, she said ‘if u can find someone to cover, ok. Dont get ur hopes up though.’ Both my bf and my dad think shes being rude af, that i should just tell her i wont be there.. they say theyre a corporation who should be able to deal with this stuff(my store is understaffed tho)

this is really new to me, im 20 and its my first real job.. could anyone whos been in this situation give me some advice on what to do?

Honest opinion, family is everything. If you are willing to get the consequences of not showing up at work then try to get coverage.if no one will then msg ur boss that i tried to look for coverage but no one will. Then tell your boss as much as i want to go to work i have to be with my brother. Then see what she would do. But be ready for losing your job (worst case) but shouldnt lose ur job for missing a few says but thats how it is.

Not sure about your countries laws but in the United States you can call out sick without proof and they cant ask for proof. As long as its not a habit its ok. Would not do this regularly or you are sure to be fired, not sure if it is the same in Germany. But tbh you could also see if someone would just cover your shift for you?

So “technically” your manager is right, it’s your responsibility to find coverage since you didn’t request time off in advance. Try to find coverage, but if you skip work without coverage be prepared to deal with the consequences (whatever they may be - it could be a write up, but they could potentially fire you (depending on your local laws on that and stuff, idk what Germany’s rules on that would be)

But it also sucks that your boss won’t work with you or attempt to help you out

I don’t live in Germany so I don’t know what your laws are over there, but I say go to your brother’s graduation. Family is so much more important than entitled people with their cups of sugar milk. You may get a write up (or possibly fired but I would like to think your manager wouldn’t do that) if you don’t get the coverage, especially since you didn’t request off ahead of time. I would still try to find coverage for those days (even for just some of them would be better than not at all) but if you can’t, don’t sweat it. As long as you don’t make calling out a habit it should be okay.

We don’t get paid enough to prioritize work over family. Congratulations to your brother btw!

Exactly! If you still wanted to work at Starbucks you could easily get hired at another store. Family is so much more important than a crap minimum wage job.

People’s over sweetened beverages should not keep you from your brother at this time. I think it’s touching that he cares so deeply. It’s a great market for job seekers right now and your boss knows that, she is playing you. I really hope you go. If you read this sub people no show without notice all the time for bad reasons or no reason. You have given notice. My SM would be asking people for you, getting someone in from another store, but my SM is resourceful
