Questions for fellow Baristas, I might’ve done a booboo(self.starbucksbaristas)

Rightio, so someone had labeled the cold brew wrong. (Whenever we get the cold brew bags, and espresso bags. We write “CB” “ESP” etc.) Well someone labeled the Espresso bag, cold brew. And I didn’t double check. So now we have a toddy in the back made with the regular espresso beans instead of the cold brew. How will this effect the taste? I would assume that it will only be a lot stronger tasting being that the ESP is a lot darker roasted. But not much else. This was done with only 1 bag and not the full set of toddies being made as I caught the mistake early on. But I didn’t tell anyone Bc frankly I was a little embarrassed haha.

I would run it as a Limited Exclusive Menu Item, which is a term I just made up for "we fucked up and you get the benefit!"
Make a sign, have your register partner ask "would you like to try coldbrew made with espresso? we're offering it today only as a preview of one awesome way to make coffee at home this summer!" and sell out of it as fast as you can. Bonus points, put some bags of espresso by the register and try to upsell the retail.

I gave you gold, and will now be stealing your idea if/when I encounter a similar issue.

Did you find out 🥺

I've done that. Tastes different, of course, but it's good. We let all the baristas who were there when we drained it taste it, and there was a consensus that it was good, so we just used it. Don't remember anyone complaining about it.

I’d be concerned to serve it thinking about how the caffeine content could be changed - would the caffeine be higher? Because someone who is pregnant or has a heart condition could really be at risk if so 😬
Also very curious about what the taste difference is like!

Honestly, if someone is pregnant or has heart condition , they really shouldn’t be drinking coffee lol.
dazedandconfusedhere4 points2y ago
Pregnant people can absolutely have coffee, but are generally recommended to have no more than 200mg per day. Someone with a heart condition would have to consult with their doctor to know what is safe for them
My point was that people track caffeine intake for health reasons, and if the different beans cause an increase in caffeine content that’d be a significant concern

Something that many don't seem to know, is that the darker the roast (strong flavor), the less caffeine. The caffeine is actually roasted out of the bean. Espresso beans would probably have a bit less caffeine than cold brew beans...but not much of a difference.

I knew darker roasts are less caffeinated, but I wasn’t sure how cold brew and espresso beans compare in roasting!
