"positive intent" ≠ safe for partners (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by colonade17
As we keep relaxing our covid precautions my SM keeps telling us to "assume positive intent" the problem I and my partners have is that customers can have positive intent and still do things that put us at risk like

\-pulling down their mask, leaning around the plexiglass, complaining about their sore throat and ask for a medicine ball

\-coming into the store unmasked and unvaccinated, yet we are directed to assume positive intent even though we're not allowed to ask if they're vaccinated

\-handing us back their beverage that they took a sip of and asking us to modify it

I don’t disagree with you, especially since it’s been politicized and turned into a conspiracy theory. Normally, I’m all about assuming positive intent, but my store is in an area that gets a lot of tourism from a certain demographic who’ll lie about getting the jab, so they don’l have to put on their “muzzle”.

One thing I find really funny is when a customer is trying to hear you better, they’ll pull down their mask. I’m always tempted to say “that’s not how ears work.”

A woman was mumbling while I was taking her order and I repeatedly had to keep telling her to speak tf up because I couldn’t hear a single thing she said. She groaned and then told me, “WELL MAYBE IF YOU WERENT WEARING A MASK YOU COULD HEAR ME”

I hope she knows that’s not how mouths work either

I think it’s more about not assuming annoying people are trying to be scammers, which has become more and more difficult the longer I’ve worked here. There’s a lady who comes in every day and orders Strawberry Açaí base with no water and no ice and a Trenta cup of ice.

For that kind of stuff I don't really care, they're hurting starbucks' bottom line, not mine. And if starbucks really cared they wouldn't let people order drinks like that. But it's slightly annoying that it means we have to order and keep stocked a crazy amount of refresher bases.

The one that really annoys me is when they very clearly order a tall or a grande and then get to window and go "oh, that was supposed to be a venti" after they've paid and gotten their drink. So now they get a free venti and get to keep the tall/grande.

At the point idc what we're supposed to do
I take back the drink and correctly charge them

Erm… it’s against policy to take back a drink after you give it to them…

Correct, but that doesn't stop people from trying.
