Stupid Question from a New Barista(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by McLouie99
Hello! I just started my new job at Starbucks two weeks ago. Is it normal to deal with crowds alone? And what are some tips to getting through them. Thank you and I look forward to all of your answers!

Sometimes it happens. Just dont mind them and make those drinks. Their yapping wont make you any faster

What do you mean by "alone"? Like, no one helping you at register and warming? Or on the floor all by yourself? The first one, yeah, sometimes. Not every moment in what is appropriately scheduled to be a slow time of day will really be slow. Sometimes a crowd just materializes for a while til you can get through it back to normal. I'm an experienced partner, so I'll try to take the lion's share at a moment like that, but I've definitely answered drive thru while sequencing cold bar and ovens because the other person left drive to ring someone up front and start their hot bar drinks. It'll pass.
If you mean literally alone because there are customers and everyone else is in back doing who knows what? No. Call them out front to help.

Like no one else in the shop. Yes.

You must be at a licensed store, because that is absolutely not allowed at a company-owned store. I'll have to defer to licensed partners to answer, but my impression is that it's pretty common at some places, though I'd hope they at least let you finish training first.

Licensed store here!
One order at a time. Remember to breath. And always remember: you are a minimum wage Starbucks barista. Do not hurt yourself trying to impress anyone, if they can’t/won’t see that you’re alone or overwhelmed, they don’t care how fast that coffee comes out, they’re going to be pissed anyway. Just keep moving and keep a smile on your face.
