My manager didn’t consider me for an ssv interview (rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)

No offense, but if any of this negative attitude towards your employer is visible in your behavior, then that’s why you’re not being considered for an interview. Managers are smart and don’t want to promote someone who is using the company for benefits, hates dealing with “shitty customers” and gets high at work for revenge.
Good luck finding something that can support your transition and that you can tolerate a little better.

Well, a lot of the customers are pretty indecent to most baristas unprovoked, and quite a few of them will cause a commotion over a lot of trivial things.

Also I’m not really sure if getting high at my job is revenge, more or less just me trying to cope with trying to pay for living and medical expenses while working a stressful job. Starbucks doesn’t pay very decent wages for anyone below management, which is most people who work there. No one really goes there because it’s fun, we work there because of benefits, like college education reimbursement and in the case of trans people, transition expenses.

So just as a expectation check / something to think about:

Everyone I knew who promoted to shift (myself included) liked working at Starbucks (not every shift, and we certainly had our frustrations) when we promoted. Our average day as a barista wasn’t stressful to us. Overall, to some extent, we felt positive about our jobs. This was a highly valued trait in us when we were promoted. The other option is you have to be exceedingly good at faking it without burning yourself out.

I also knew several shifts who stepped down or left the company because they couldn’t handle the stress of being a shift.

Well, it’s not so much the job itself that’s bad, it’s more how customers are seemingly allowed to treat employees for the most part however they want. I’ve also had the opposite experience where I’ve worked around. No shift I know at my location enjoys their job that much.

The major reason I haven’t been able to promote in the 2 years I’ve been here is that as a barista, I’ve experienced a lot of transphobia from customers and coworkers. I’m into my transition far enough where I don’t get harrassed by customers anymore but the awful experience is still there. Otherwise, I’m fully capable at my job and I’ve been able to do so much wherever I’ve been working.

And like I’ve said before, Starbucks doesn’t pay it’s employees enough. It’s hard for a lot of people around me, me included, to see worth and value in their jobs if they can hardly afford basic expenses.

As somebody who also struggles with self harm I’m gonna warn you to be very mindful of your mental health if you do end up promoting, because there were times where the stress and lack of support drove me to hurt myself and the money eventually wasn’t worth it anymore.

Thank you. I would’ve quit a while ago but I’m kind of just waiting to take advantage of the benefits because the benefits for trans people are half decent.

They’re still a little inaccessible because they don’t cover a lot of the cost of transition in general, but it’s better than other places I can work at right now. I’m just holding out to get 2 gender affirming procedures next year and then I’m quitting for good.

Look for other ssv positions posted in your area. It wouldn’t be your store, but maybe the managers at the other stores see you for how great you are and would love to have you as an ssv.

Thank you! I’ve been trying in the past week, but there aren’t many openings right now. I’m gonna continue looking whenever I can 💖
