2nd 10’s? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lampshade2319
I recently discovered that we are supposed to be getting two 10’s and a half after a certain amount of hours. I told a few of my coworkers and no one else knew. When my SM was confronted, they said that we don’t need them. Does anyone else have this problem?

SSV here, I usually run a busy store.

When i first started out I sucked about last 10s, now it depends on how busy it is. I usually am able to get everyone their last 10, but if I cant, I try to get them out 10 minutes early (if they want to). I personally try to , in a 8 hour shift, give a 10 after 2 hours, lunch after 4-5, and then the last 10 in the last 2 hours.

I would argue your store manager can’t say you… can’t have them? I mean you’re legally required to have two 10s and a lunch for 8 hours so… just give them? Sounds kinda sus to me.

Take your breaks, period. Sometimes if I’m not play calling I will announce I need/am taking a 10 if another SSV forgets. This place gets too stressful sometimes to not take a break.

Hope this helps

Let’s say they are optional: why make your floor annoyed with you because they didn’t get their breaks?

I was trained to give the breaks or get in trouble. I’d rather the floor feel good than have people burn out on me. What are you going to do when someone starts to ask for their 10 and you say no? Someone’s gonna take it anyway. What if they look at the DCR and they notice you’ve slashed their 10s away because… you didn’t want them to have them? For what?…so just give it to them. Don’t make work more stressful than what it has to be if you ask me 🤷🏽‍♀️

I thought 10’s were optional especially the second ones.

At least at corporate stores it's policy that you take all scheduled breaks.

Yeah, our DCR will show the two tens but we never get both of them. Thank you!

I’m taking a second 10 no matter how busy it gets. If I’m working eight hours of nonstop rush then I need that break.

You're breaks depend on the length of your shift. Under 6 hours and you only get one 10. if it's 6-7 hours you get a 10 and a 30. 8 hours or more two 10s and a 30. You are supposed to get all of your breaks.

However many SMs and DMs have a policy of no breaks during peak, and that you can't send more than one person on break at the same time. That can make it very difficult to give everyone their 2nd 10 before they have to clock out.

The second one is kind of optional. If they can afford to send you off the floor for 10 minutes theres absolutely no reason you shouldn't get it. I've missed giving a second break just a few times. Usually if its really THAT busy, since I'm good about making sure everyone gets all their breaks, the baristas will say "I don't need my last break, I'm okay to keep helping" which is wonderful and isn't necessary majority of the time. I'll also take my last break (as the SSV) only after everyone else has gotten theirs. If someone is gonna miss a break, its gonna be me.

I'd rather drown for a few minutes than have my entire floor be exhausted and in a bad mood. Always give everyone their breaks

Also, where I am we get two 15s and a 30 depending on how long your shift is, not 10s. The LEAST they can give you is a 10

Basing this information of the assumption that you work at a corporate store, (license stores can make their own rules, and do) it should be like this: you need to have been OFFERED a lunch after 6 hours (a minor needs to have already had a lunch when 4 hours comes along), and 10s are decided by shift managers individually. you do not need to even be offered a 10, its only when business permits. ideally you would get a break about every 2 hours working an 8 hour shift but that isn't how everything always runs. It does sound like however that you guys don't ever get 10s? I would bring this up with shift managers individually and if change is still not present then contact your district manager directly. Wishing you luck!! everyone deserves their appropriate breaks even on bad days.

You’re legally required to take a lunch. It’s not an option.

Depends on your local laws. Most cities and states have no requirement to take any breaks at all, so most of the time it's just company policy to take your breaks.

The partner guide actually says that one ten minute rest break is provided for every four hours (or major fraction thereof) worked, and 30 min meal breaks are given based on the length of the shift and the state you work in (usually after 6 hours)

Starbucks policy does require you to be offered a 10

I’m sorry. I was unclear. We get one ten every shift, but some baristas pull 8.5/9 hour shifts without a second ten. Thank you for answering!
