Venti Sized Rant - markouts & ID Verification(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mx1_jawbreaker
I know this has been said before by people more eloquent than me. but here it is.
I'm transgender. female to male. been out for years. began medically transitioning in 2019. I JUST got top surgery last Thursday (06/10) and wanted to celebrate the fact that I can stand & operate on my own. so i went to the nearest Starbucks and to get myself my typical 3 shots of espresso on ice. I tried giving my numbers and they ask for my ID -- my ID that still has my female name & information. info that doesn't match the Starbucks system anyway.
I insist that my ID isn't going to match bc I'm trans. I give my name that I use socially & is on file. they say that's not going to work and I MUST show my ID.
I break and say that I WILL NOT humiliate myself and show an ID that has my female name. my name is Christopher Jones (fake) and I'm using my markout.
I cannot BELIEVE that people are still asking for IDs. you want to see my FEMALE drivers license with a FEMALE NAME that will definitely NOT match the Starbucks system??? for what?? because you can't believe that I'm the real Christopher Jones (fake) who's worked for Starbucks for almost two years???
anyway. tl;dr. asking for partner ID's is horrible. hate it. refuse to do it. if you insist on asking for people's ID's then I strongly dislike you too.

I’m sorry but it’s policy when you provide your numbers verbally that we must verify with ID. Try to bring your partner card with you if you have it or upload your partner card to your app. Problem solved.

love this idea ! actually planning on using it in the future ! however ! still sucks for cis folks who maybe go by a nickname at Starbucks and never think of this issue until one day your drivers ID for "Susanna Lang" isn't good enough to verify "Suz"
Jandcat277 points2y ago
Yea it does suck! It always been an issue, verifying people’s partner number/name, but it became a big issue when tik tok started encouraging people to rip our numbers off the receipts
FfierceLaw2 points2y ago
I don't think our whole partner number shows on receipts
Jandcat277 points2y ago
It did previously. Until the Tik Tok issues and then they changed the receipts

Not in my store. We are not made to ask for IDs. Your policy is not universal and it hurts partners
OneRoseDark10 points2y ago
It is. Just because your store isn't enforcing it doesn't mean it's not a policy.
astivana2 points2y ago
Technically the official policy is that you need a partner card to use your partner numbers. The ID is a workaround of sorts because so many people don’t have partner cards.
Alana_Chowdhury_4 points2y ago
While asking for the ID is policy you can put your numbers on your app and have them scan. When your numbers are on the app they don’t need ID.

Hi, I was just hired and was told to prevent this very situation to ask for other identifiers like the store where you work. Or if that's not enough maybe your managers name. Most of the time I just have good faith that the person is a partner if they know the numbers.

Even though asking for ID is policy, I never do because of situations like this. If someone doesn’t really seem like they’re a partner I’ll whip out the ‘ol “Do you have your ID on you to confirm that you’re who you say you are?” And if I do ask for ID and the partner explains they’re trans or go by a different name then I don’t mind doing the discount
My SM/SSVs don’t make a huge deal about it, so unless they get strict on it, I won’t either.

Literally I have been having the same problem since I was hired :( I always tell people this and they often actually get annoyed ?? I have begun bringing my bosses business card with me and tell them they can call her and confirm if they really feel like making such a big hassle out of it. Ngl sbux is kind of stupid for still forcing us to enforce the ID policy when they KNOW their trans partners' names arent going to match their ID. It's a very thoughtless oversight
astivana2 points2y ago
Have you looked into getting a partner card? You can set it up digitally on the app if you don’t want to deal with getting a physical one.
Chemical-Less2 points2y ago
A partner card sounds like it'd be pretty helpful 👀🤔 how would I go about getting it?
80sserialkiller2 points2y ago
i just type in the numbers and hand out their shit. truly none of my business 👀 very sorry u had to go thru some cis nonsense
baristagabs2 points2y ago
I never ask for ID because it’s such an obnoxious hassle. For some reason I get offended when I’m asked. All I do at window is ask what store they work at.
NotyourangeLbabe1 points2y ago
I get why you don’t want to show your ID. Your ID doesn’t reflect who you actually are. And that’s fair. I think it’s shitty how the partner didn’t listen to your situation and show some more compassion and understanding. But asking for IDs is policy. And I’m going to keep following policy while maintaining human compassion and decency.
