our store wanted to put stuff up for Juneteenth just like we decorated for pride. we had this up for abt 2 days and then our DM made us take it down. we stirred too much trouble 😳 customers were not happy (i.redd.it)

Starbucks is so performative omg
Koffee-Brown 119 points 2y ago
So they provided us with shirts that say it (small af), but don’t want it stated unequivocally? I’m quitting today.
Koffee-Brown 47 points 2y ago
The shirt that we got during the “oh, we f’d up” moment of them initially saying we couldn’t wear anything BLM related. They changed their position within hours and provided us with a bare minimum show of support t-shirt.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 11 points 2y ago
That was such a fucking joke of a moment for them as a company. They're lucky tho because for some reason everyone's forgotten that that travesty ever happened. That, or they're just naive af and fell for the bait with the t-shirt of guilt.
WorthPrinciple7049 1 points 2y ago
I literally don’t remember that happening. Hey, people are allowed to realize their mistakes and fix it. We still wear our shirts. Our SM put a BLM sticker in the window and then removed it due to a couple of customers threatening baristas. 🤷🏻‍♀️
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 11 points 2y ago
It's ok if you don't remember this, but this isn't the first time they've done this shit, so not only is it insensitive, rude, frustrating, hypocritical bullshit trying to pass as all-loving (and getting away with it), but the repetitiveness of these instances grows more and more insulting to those of us who notice and know the truth because we see how they blatantly exploit all of the beautiful things they claim to be all about.

That is fucking awful about the threatening customers. Absolute bullshit on those customers. But I'm calling bullshit on management too for choosing to give in to hate instead of using their right to refuse service. I sure as hell don't want to work anywhere that would take a BLM sticker down (a sticker... a STICKER!! *One* sticker?? Really?) just so that they can keep profiting off of a clearly dangerous homophobe. Absolutely not. And sadly sbux isn't the first, nor the only business I've had to leave due to said businesses actively participating and/or perpetuating racism.

But if I couldn't have left those places, and they did what your manager did, I would go to my DM, if I were you. It is definitely not right what your sm did, and, as we've been talking about this entire time, what your sm was so against everything the sbux claims *so hard* to be (butI'm not even convinced that a dm would do the right thing in this situation, but it's still worth the try at the very least). And so that right there is just *one more* "accidental dropping of the curtains" from good ol Starbucks! :D lol

Edits - spelling :/
Koffee-Brown 3 points 2y ago
It’s great that you have the luxury to not have to remember things like that. Unfortunately, it’s just another example that runs in some of our minds on loop. The fact that you think it was just a “mistake” that they “fixed” instead of a potential p.r nightmare that they avoided shows why they think everyone can be fooled.
FfierceLaw 8 points 2y ago
you got a shirt?
sammieduck69420 2 points 2y ago
RIGHT
orbitalrevolution 3 points 2y ago
If you are deciding to quit for this reason, you my friend, are doing the right thing.
LindaFromAccounting_ 71 points 2y ago
weird that we stand with gay rights but not black rights..? Starbucks definitely caters to a racist America and it shows 🥴
PsychologicalShelf 37 points 2y ago
They’re a business.. they cater to whatever’s hot topic and will sell the most merch at the time. They don’t ‘stand’ for anything but their bank balance!
spark908 -13 points 2y ago
As the below response said, it's whatever makes money. Bmw had a nazi symbol at one point on some of their logos because at the time, it made them money! Also what's with all of this juneteenth stuff? Is it us rebranding the day Americans slaughtered all the indigenous peoples? I don't get it
dfarner 16 points 2y ago
Are you asking what Juneteenth is?
spark908 -3 points 2y ago
Yeah I've been seeing it around and it was recently made a national holiday??
dfarner 16 points 2y ago
It’s the day all the slaves were freed in 1865
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 2 points 2y ago
>it's whatever makes money.

That's what's so shit about it though. They claim as a corporation to care soooooo much and they're sooooooo inclusive and suuuuuch a safe place for one and all 🥰🥰🥰

We know better though.
spark908 1 points 2y ago
Oh yeah, not at all. If you expect a corporation to be caring and loving of their employees and customers, you're not having realistic expectations in my opinion. Theur sole purpose is to make money, they'll paint themselves in whatever way they like if it gets them more profit.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 3 points 2y ago
Well yeah, that's just capitalism bay-bee. But sbux goes above and beyond (gagging as I type this) that, they specifically market themselves to seem as though they are pretty much the *only* company out there that *doesn't* care about profit over people. So much of the employee training is all but literally drilling this notion in people's heads. Shit even on this sub they're are regular posts from partners just gushing about how much they love this job and how appreciated they feel working for this company. They're are *so* many people who fallen into this trap and truly believe that if things came form to it, sbux would always choose person over profit. It's like, Starbuck's *thing*, you know? Like they put a lot of fuckin effort trying to convince the world (and themselves) of this, *much* much more effort than any other company would ever even care about.

So when their curtain accidentally drops and they blatantly contradict their very own most prided and beloved morals, it's just *that* much more of an insult (or if you're like me, *that* much more of a fucking joke) and goes *way* deeper than just "op, well bottom like is bottom line folks" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
El_Trundo17 47 points 2y ago
I know, I’m black and gay. But we can only support one.
drinkliquidclocks 26 points 2y ago
Customers were mad that black lives matter... I fucking hate it here 🤤
spark908 -30 points 2y ago
From what I've seen It's not equality that customers and others are mad at. It's the movement itself and the violent riots that happened under black lives matter that people associate it with because the mainstream media focused solely on that.
Nicckles 13 points 2y ago
yawn
spark908 -10 points 2y ago
I was replying to why I think customers don't like blm. I know the only media coverage I saw about blm had cars and businesses being set on fire :/ pretty sure I can call that a riot
hctiB_bmuD 16 points 2y ago
You obviously don't understand why what happened, happened. Just stop talking please
austamas_ 8 points 2y ago
It is a movement rebelling against the systemic oppression of Black people in North America. I get that seeing destruction on the news is scary, but when the only thing the system cares about is capitol and private property, destructive rioting becomes the only legitimate form of rebellion.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 3 points 2y ago
>I know the only media coverage I saw about blm had cars and businesses being set on fire :/ pretty sure I can call that a riot

Ok, reread that sentence. Do you not see how bias you are? And don't come back trying to say you got your info from multiple sources, because even if that were true, your extreme biases are still there since there were *many*, firsthand sources that were broadcasting from the ground. Like, up in everything, and they all showed what can only be described as protest that was *more* than peaceful. So peaceful in fact, that you could see as clear as day, police department intentionally provoking and outright assaulting these peaceful protesters. Using actual gorilla warfare tactics to herd and entrap the large group, causing extreme claustrophobia and panic. Shooting rubber bullets *point blank at protesters* instead of aiming *at the ground* as they're *intended* to be shot. *Pepper spraying literal CHILDREN in the FACE*.

It's not bizarre or out of the ordinary for PD's/LEO's to instigate to the point of provocation in situations such as protests.

Also, it's been all over so many news sources that most of the looting and damage was in fact done by the right, in hopes that the general public would think it was actually liberals/aNtiFa. And even more specifically, it was reported all over that *the very first instance of ANY violence or damage* done during 2020 summer protests, damage/looting of an Ace hardware iirc, was actually the act of an pff duty PO wearing all black hoping to be mistaken for aNtiFa. His ex-wife saw pictures of him breaking the large window with a pink umbrella that was once hers. She turned him in right away.
ohnoifuckedupfr 2 points 2y ago
bro get tf off this subreddit.. 😭 you may have an opinion but no one asked to hear it.
drinkliquidclocks 0 points 2y ago
They don't like it because they are racist and don't think black lives matter, byeee
BusyLeek2351 -2 points 2y ago
I don’t see why you’re getting so many downvotes your point is valid
Gameb0i6 14 points 2y ago
People are stupid. We had a customer stop coming in cuz apparently we were shoving the Black Lives Matter down his throat so much. The store is better off without his racist ex cop ass coming in anyways.
Proof_Papaya296 11 points 2y ago
Starbucks is crazy for valuing those customers enough to take it down. Yeah
HippieinBlack 7 points 2y ago
What a shame. Starbucks needs to do better
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 5 points 2y ago
Last year during the protests my manager had just printed out a bunch of stuff for partners to read, it was stuff like how to cope right now if you're having overwhelming feelings, what to do if there's some action going down in/outside your store, shit like that. So she handed them to me and explained what they were like this: "So in here it talks about [shit I just mentioned], and it says that we may get some customers who want us to write 'BLM' or 'George Floyd on their cups but we have to tell him no, the company doesn't want us to do that so we're not aloud".

She wanted me (shift for the day) to make sure everyone on the floor was aware of this.

On the second page of stiff the printed out, it specifically said that as employees we *COULD* write things like that on people's cups if they asked us to, as long as we were *comfortable* doing so, but we didn't have to if we didn't want to.

So why the fuck did my manager lie about that shit??? Especially since the literature that SHE printed out and wanted EVERYONE to read, says otherwise??? 🙄
jujubbyx 6 points 2y ago
ur managers racist..
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 2 points 2y ago
Yes, basically what I was trying to get at lol
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr 1 points 2y ago
Ps she's not my manager any more. She was by very far THE absolute worst, most shit fucking "boss" I've ever had. And that includes 2 whole OTHER bosses who were also racist as fuck, but even they still weren't as awful as the sbux boss...
papayaushuaia 4 points 2y ago
Can they spell : Hypocrite
LatterRooster 3 points 2y ago
Oh no. I’d write to corporate. This is your work environment. Show your pride. I mean I don’t celebrate Christmas and I don’t mind all the damn Christmas stuff everywhere ! Jesus Christ
sp_c_g_d 3 points 2y ago
I know it’s rude to say “duh” but if the last few years haven’t proven it, I don’t know what will.

Remember when Starbucks told us we couldn’t wear any BLM stuff because starbs wasn’t political? And then a month later came out with the “stand together” BLM shirts and said “we were working on this the whole time!!!”
kmoonster 3 points 2y ago
Are the customers aware of what Starbucks has been known for off and on for 40 years?
Raging_phoenix915 2 points 2y ago
Starbucks supports whatever is IN at the moment. So when people started supporting the LGBTQ community then THEY started supporting with more and more merchandise, cups etc. But NEVER anything racial, political or religious if it’s not the IN thing to do.
wickedrevenant 1 points 2y ago
Can someone fact check me in whether or not BLM is a political movement now?
We're not allowed to wear/ show 'political statements'?
scarred_beauty 2 points 2y ago
It is not now and never was.
Social-Introvert- 1 points 2y ago
Huh? We literally were given BLM shirts this past fall. Your DM is a douche!!!
neopossums 1 points 2y ago
we weren’t even allowed to decorate for pride 🤣🤣
havensward 1 points 2y ago
The most our DM allowed was a string of flags (rainbow, trans, ace, I think?) hanging from the counters. Nothing on the walls, nothing on the community chalk board thing at the front. My manager bought us pins, but to get the pride shirt this year you have to buy it. The corporate "support" is just blowing smoke up three public's ass.
stevebuckyy 2 points 2y ago
you had to buy yours? that's so frustrating :( our sm bought ours this year but last year we had to buy ours
neopossums 1 points 2y ago
we have a temporary dm for rn and our sm asked her if we could put some stuff up and she said no :/ couldn’t imagine asking for juneteenth. hopefully our permanent dm is a half decent person <3
