how to quit when you’ve barely started(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by wisteriawaterfall
i trained at a different store, today was my first day at the place i was actually hired. i didn’t know until today, but it’s super understaffed i guess (literally 1 person on hot bar & 1 person on cold bar) & the manager is also brand new.
i didn’t really know what i was doing because some of it i either didn’t learn in training or had only done a couple times (my training was also a week ago). they put me on the register, which i had only done for maybe an hour or two during training, & the store was absolutely packed. every time i asked a question the manager got really annoyed with me (which i kind of understand because she had a lot to do since there were so many customers, but it still sucked).
they kept asking things of me that i just had no idea how to do & i couldn’t ask for help because it would slow them down & the manager would get mad at me again. i didn’t even last the entire shift, the manager just told me to leave since she didn’t have time to help me. the customers also sucked, i felt like they just thought i wasn’t a person. the only thing good about my experience was my coworker giving me a hug after i cried in the back because i couldn’t find the cups to restock.
this was also my first job ever (i’m in high school & everybody else is in their 20s at least. yay being out of place). i realized i can’t do this, either my training wasn’t good enough (the girl training me said it was the first time she ever trained anybody) or i’m just not cut out for food service, but either way i need to find another job.
i feel like an idiot for quitting a week into the job, but how do i quit?

First of all, I want to say it’s impossible to know everything after your training week. Your manager handled this situation VERY poorly & im sorry you had to go through that. But it’s 100% normal to have questions and need to ask for help!! It’s pretty well known that it takes 3-6 months to be confident at the job at Starbucks.
If you want to quit, all you need to do is tell your manager that you’re putting in your notice and your last day will be xyz (2 weeks notice is standard but it’s really up to you)
If you want to give the job another chance, I’d suggest having a sit-down with your manager. Talk through what their expectations are (and figure out if those expectations are reasonable or not) and then go from there

is training supposed to be a week???? mine was 3 days (+ online) and then i didn’t work for a week afterwards. i actually wasn’t on the schedule for 2 weeks, i was covering for someone today

My training was 5 shifts. Spent the first hour of each shift on computer training, then did actual training for the rest

If you really want to quit, just call the sm and say you won’t be coming back. Or you can stick it out for two weeks but if it’s that bad, they don’t deserve your time.
And if you still want to work at Starbucks quit and then reappply at another location (you can’t transfer until 6 months in unless you have a GOOD reason)
Best of luck & I hope things get better for you 🥺 It sucks having a team that doesn’t give the support you need!! Your manager never should’ve scheduled you on a saturday if they knew how busy it would be and that you would still need help

Honestly reach out to your dm and explain your story maybe move to a better store?

for starters, let your SM know when your last day will be . you don’t have to give out a reason if you don’t want to . (like the previous comment mentioned, 2 weeks is what you’re “suppose” to give notice) . I wish you could work with me ! my trainer at the time and SM are both super kind and they still help me out till this day. but yeah go for it. my boyfriends says we don’t quit because of the job, we quit because of managers. i’m thinking of quitting too , but because my SSV is a big asshole . all she does is follow me around and criticize everything i do, whereas my SM tells me im doing a good job. she talked to her already, but im thinking of contacting the DM because it’s been twice that she made me feel like im so worthless and i can’t do my job right ):

Dear baby barista. This job is usually fun. It definitely takes about 3 months to feel fully trained in everything, and still be growing in confidence. At the moment, a lot of us are in trenches sadly. Starbucks is not staffing stores well, and not giving us enough labor to run many stores how they should be run. On top of shitty labor, we are having supply outages left and right, and customers have NOT been taking it well. Right now, this is the most its sucked in 6 1/2 years by far. I won't lie to you green bean. If you really feel this is not the right "fit" for you, just go ahead and quit. You only really need to give a two week notice if you want to use the job as a reference. If that's not important to you (seeing as you said you are in HS still, it's really not that big of a deal) then just quit boo! Call them up and say this isn't a good fit, you are not obligated to them in any way shape or form. The manager and their district manager will figure it out with support from other stores. My heart breaks for you, no one should cry over Starbucks it's literally not worth it. (Trust me, I know it sounds terrible) But starbs can replace you in a few days. Good luck, you do you boo. 💚

So it is normal to only train for a few days and feel pretty uncomfortable to start because there’s just so much to learn. It’s also pretty normal to be kind of thrown into the deep end on register when you’re new.
What’s unacceptable is the way your SM was treating you. That’s some absolute bullshit, to be honest. I was a trainer/shift for over 5 years and even in the weeds it’s not the new person’s fault that they need help. It takes 2 months minimum to be comfortable with drinks and everything.
That manager is not respecting you, so if you want to leave, being as new as you are, I don’t think you owe them two weeks. I would caution that not doing your two weeks might make you nonrehirable if you think you might ever go back to Starbucks
