Can my manager demand medical documentation?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iLovePayne
Long story short. I got a few migraines and called out (maybe three shifts over a few months). Today I’m not sure what happened but I got sick right before work I legit barely could stand to clock in. My one shift was pissy when she saw this. I vomited an hour into my shift. Shift was very mad. Late tonight I get a passive aggressive text from my SM that I can’t be doing this as I’m a burden to the store. And now she demands I bring her medical documents to show what I’m doing for migraines DESPITE me never mentioning that I had one today. DESPITE people seeing I was and COMMENTING I was sick today.

Cant demand like a treatment document showing that you are being treated for migraines with information such as medications. The most is just a doctors note

Thing is I didn’t even leave today with a migraine… maybe problems from the heat. Like my boyfriend drove me to work. I was dizzy getting out. couldn’t stand after sitting in the cafe. They say him panic when I tried to stand and I stumbled. So I’m just probably going to forward the texts to higher ups if it gets to that point

Nope. Call PRC.
Legally, you aren’t required to provide medical proof unless you are requesting FMLA or an ADA accommodation and then it’s very specific types of info and also, not something your manager should be handling.
Even a doctor’s note saying you were seen or advising an absence is supposed to be against policy, although it’s legal to require (in most states).
They CAN discipline you for excessive absenteeism, but this doesn’t sound like that.

Medical documents are confidential! Plus, if you’re sick, you’re sick. Your shifts or manager can get as pissy as they want but you shouldn’t be there if you’re sick and it’s your right and responsibility to protect others by not showing up to work if you’re sick. Also, it’s not your job to find someone else to cover your shifts if you call out sick. I know this part isn’t related to your post but I have some store managers who get really mad about this even though it’s literally their job to find someone to cover your shift and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
