What is protocol for grinding beans from outside (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iStealSharpies
A customer came in today and wanted me to grind a very large bag of French roast (the kind that you buy at BJs or Costco). It was Starbucks brand coffee, but from what I understand, we can’t grind beans from outside because of covid. I’ve heard this from 2 different SSVs on other occasions. When I explained that I’m not able to grind the beans to the customer she got very upset and pretty much tore me a new one because “no one has ever said that before”. Was I wrong? Are we allowed to grind outside beans?

I don't think we can grind it unless we sell it in our stores. If management told you that go with that. If another store does it for them they should go there 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dude she made it seem like she would come to my store all the time and get them ground. I have never seen her in my life. 😂

Yeah, we're only supposed to grind Starbucks bags of coffee. They don't have to be bought from your specific store, but they cannot already have been opened. It's a food safety issue. Some managers pre-covid might've ground non- Starbucks (unopened) bags for regulars, but all of that went out the window with Covid and we now, unless there's been an update I'm not aware of, can only ground bags at the time of purchase.

Thank you for confirming. I had a feeling this was the case but she really made me feel like I was wrong when she started whining about it

Yeah, no worries! And don't pay them too much attention, they like to that lol

I work at a location inside a hospital, we aren't allowed to grind anything from outside. Like, anything. If a customer buys a bag, walks out of the store with it, then walks back in, technically we aren't supposed to grind it.

I ground one of those the other day 🧍🏻‍♀️ but to be fair, restrictions are pretty much non existent in California now and my shift said it was okay to do it

Starbucks policy states that because of Covid, we are currently only able to grind beans purchased in store during that visit. Pre-Covid yes we could grind “outside” coffee but not currently. It’s on the Hub and they also tell you how to inform the customer if they want you to grind beans that left the cafe.

Must be a sealed starbucks branded bag of beans. We have to refuse anything else because we can't be certain of what's in the bag, and it could contaminate our equipment.

my SM told me the other day we can’t grind anything from outside cuz of Covid. But I don’t know if this is a universal thing

Yes, this is exactly what I thought. Thank you for confirming!!

As long as it is Starbucks brand you can grind it. This includes the big bags from Costco. I would verify with your SM current Covid protocol but outside of covid times you definitely could grind those bags.

Outside of covid, yeah, but I’m asking about now. This lady caused a whole big stink about it and I was just wondering if I was wrong for turning her away

Our sm started to have us grind Starbucks coffee brought in. And too be honest, this has been way too much of a shitshow to actually research it on the hub. But your answer will be there!
