Interview Process (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by LuckyPotter777
Hello! I am in the process of interviewing for a position at my local Starbucks, and I want to know what to expect during the in-person interview. Could you please give insight into the types of questions, scenarios, and other general things to prep for? Sincerely, a nervous teen.

I remember a lot of questions about availability, how you work in teams, flexibility, and traveling. And then there were some scenarios questions about how to deal with customers and coworkers and just in general your work style. They also ask a bit about past experience you have but, honestly they teach you everything when your new so you don’t really need to worry about not having any experience unless they are looking for experienced baristas but I doubt that.

I always say your way more likely to be hired if your flexible with your hours. And have an easy time working with a team. Also if you can even if it’s not your normal attitude try sounding a little more cheerful, because honestly their really looking for some one who make customers feel better about their experience there.

The most important answers that I gave that made me stand out (I was told later after hired) was regarding customer service, they will probably ask a few regarding what the perfect experience would look like for you, how to handle a disagreement ect. And they really want Starbucks partners that will make a great experience, from my past jobs I touched on that really getting to know someone and asking about their day, meeting someone you never would have met otherwise is so cool and great! When I have been a customer, and the worker made an effort to connect with me, I definitely walked away thinking wow that was so nice I like this person/place. They might also ask what plans you have for your future/what you want to do, not right out say but basically asking if growing in the company is where your headed or just a short term job. One isn’t right or wrong (especially if you’re a teenager) as long as you value being reliable for the team while you are there (being on time, calling in an appropriate amount of time ahead) basically being friendly with everyone, wanting to learn about coffee more deeply, and a responsible partner. During my in person interview we did a coffee tasting as well, so being excited and asking questions about it definitely makes a good impression if they do that! And most importantly, you can relax and be yourself, they would love to see that, you got this best of luck!!!!

Definitely act friendly and excited. It's okay to be nervous. Your manager will see that you're a teenager and will react accordingly (they'll probably assume you have no prior experience and will form different questions - they'll also assume that you're nervous, cuz let's face it - interviews are nerve wracking). If you have any experience in clubs or volunteer positions, use those!

I got my first job (not Starbucks) because I was super active in a service organization called Key Club and I was able to describe what I learned and how I helped people while in that "position". Managers like to hear how you "helped", even if it was a one-time volunteer position. They especially like to hear that you were involved in something that wasn't just school because social interaction is important.

Did/do you babysit? Use that also! (It's always overlooked in job interviews - but it shows you're responsible especially if you don't have any experience yet).

Good luck!

Thank you for the second paragraph. Ill definitely include some volunteer work in my interview.

Most of my first interview focused on how I feel and act during interactions with customers and partners. The second interview was more personal and focused on specific questions about myself. Make an effort to show that you are eager to be understanding and empathetic without being too obvious.

Here’s what they’re looking for most:

•They’re looking for someone who’s willing to make a connection with every single customer.

•They’re looking for someone who’s a fast learner and into heavy labor. (If you’re not a fast learner, that’s okay, they really just wanna know that you’re prepared to learn… a lot).

•They’re looking for someone who remains professional, calm, and collected through the rude customers and the sassy coworkers.

Just be yourself and you’ll be fine.
