Asking for a raise (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by wifeypoopoo
Can I ask for a raise at Starbucks? I haven't heard of anyone doing it on here or at my store. But I've been at Starbucks since December. And I finally feel like I have everything down and am pretty good at all of the positions. Thoughts?

There are no merit based raises
LatteMaster 0 points 2y ago
Not true. Just depends on your district and its management and whether they will approve raises.

If you feel you deserve it go to your manager and ask for one. Be prepared to explain why you deserve it. I normally asked for personal raises in increments of 50 cents when I was a barista. Some managers will go up to bat for you and ask the DM to approve it, some wont. Also it may be that the DM refuses sometimes. Its all a lot of luck imo.

Starbucks doesn't give merit-based raises because it opens the door to discrimination and favoritism. Even well-meaning management can fall into unintentional bias and wind up favoring people who "look like them" either in a physical or personality sense. To prevent people from being left behind by unconscious bias or conscious sexism/racism, Starbucks gives annual raises to everyone and doesn't allow negotiation of compensation. You make what you make, and so does everyone else.

This is absolutely not true. You can ask for a merit based raise. I have gotten 3 it is just up to your manager and dm if they are going to approve it I believe. Being good at your job isn’t discrimination lmao or favoritism.

The problem is that whether you're considered good at your job is a subjective measurement. Does the boss like you or think you remind him of himself at your age? 50¢ raise for you! Does the boss think you're annoying, or think less of your work ethic because you're black, or come down harder on your late clock-ins because you're a working mom? 25¢ raise for you. You may not know it's happening -- the boss may not know it's happening! But "good at your job" is a wishy-washy enough standard that it's not just possible to discriminate -- it verifiably happens. There have been studies on this!

You make it way more about discrimination than it actually is. Sure there might be some studies showing bias, bias is always there. Rewarding good employees is just good to do. If you are showing up late to work with a qualified excuses your boss will understand. There a definitely good employees and bad employees and its easy to spot them. I dont fully disagree, but with your logic no one should ever get a personal raise because it is hurting others which is just not true. If you put in the work and are a kiss ass, you should be rewarded thats the point of a raise.

That’s not true. I have seen others and personally been apart of getting a raise due to working hard.

I haven’t gotten a raise after 2.5 years, so good luck
LatteMaster 3 points 2y ago
We get yearly raises at corporate locations so that wouldn’t be true if you work corporate. Although aside from the 10% raise we got last year. Normally it is a cost of living adjustment.

Yeah I don’t consider that a raise.
Rare_Dragonfruit1885 10 points 2y ago
Not considering a raise a raise doesn’t mean it isn’t one. If you don’t appreciate your position at your company, you don’t have to bring other people down for it

I literally wished them good luck...👍
LatteMaster 1 points 2y ago
Well the 10% certainly was one. Also if you feel you are being under-appreciated for your experience you can always ask!
BeardiesRule112 1 points 2y ago
Which I have done, it’s pointless.
variazioni 0 points 2y ago
10% raise is a lot
BeardiesRule112 2 points 2y ago
Not when they’re raising minimum wage in your state immediately after. No it’s really not.

A 16 year partner at my store has never gotten a raise unless everyone else was too 😭
