Free drink during my interview(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by roxman68
Hi I am having a interview in a few days and I heard you get a free drink while you are interviewing. I am thinking about getting a vanilla bean with soy but should I get something with coffee to show that I know what I am talking about or some other drink that shows I know the secret menu
barista1947105743 points2y ago
Please don't do secret menu drinks. thanks
roxman68 [OP]-11 points2y ago
Why
maytrrs30 points2y ago
bc you cant know the secret menu since there isnt one 😭
barista194710574 points2y ago
That was a lot quicker than my response 😂😂😂😭
barista1947105715 points2y ago
Unless it's just a simple customization, we hate those drinks. You aren't required or taught secret menu drinks. Even if we know what's in a "butter beer" or "cotton candy" frappuccino we really aren't supposed to respond to those names because so many baristas don't know them. It's a kind of a running joke that the secret menu is a secret from the baristas. Stick with menu items or something that has little customizations. Change a milk or a syrup for sure! But most secret menu drinks have a paragraph longer than this one for a recipe

How many customizes are okay? I like the vanilla frappe but I can’t drink dairy and I like to make it pink
barista1947105711 points2y ago
How do you make it pink? And call it a frappuccino especially if you want to work for sbux because frappe is trademarked by McDonald's and Starbucks trademarked frappuccinos
lelaluv18 points2y ago
it doesn’t matter. and don’t do a secret menu drink unless you want your potential co workers to already be annoyed by you.
roxman68 [OP]0 points2y ago
Okay I won’t do that then. Any advice on how to get them to like me instead?
sydbey_7 points2y ago
Be nice and eager to learn
lelaluv4 points2y ago
just be nice and have a good work ethic, that’s really it!
roxman68 [OP]1 points2y ago
Okay great!

Ive seen you make a lot of posts about the free drink so I just wanna give you some advice. Do not go in and ask for a free drink. They will most likely offer you a drink, but if they don’t, do not ask for a free one, that does not look good. Same if maybe a new person rings you up and charges you for the drink. It’s not gonna make a good impression to ask for free things if you’re not offered them
roxman68 [OP]-10 points2y ago
Oh okay. I guess I’ll go to the register and if they don’t make it free then I’ll cancel my order
YorkTownBratty12 points2y ago
Just don’t order until they offer. The hiring manager will offer and tell the barista making it that it’s for you and you’re interviewing. It’s bad form to ask for free things at an interview. They will offer but please for the love of god don’t do any of the things you’re saying that you might do.

I literally got a water and was hired the same day. The drink is a courtesy, it's not a test. Get something you will enjoy, and be prepared to talk about it a little. Why do you like it, how would you describe it to a customer, what might you upsell with it. If you don't get a drink you'll likely be asked this stuff or similar questions anyway.
roxman68 [OP]-7 points2y ago
You got a water!? 😅😅😅🤣😂😂 what did you say pears well with water hahaha
OneRoseDark14 points2y ago
Yes, I got water. I always get water at interviews because hydration is important and something to sip on is good for my ADHD. I also don't want to be distracted by "is this cool enough to drink yet" or "do I have a foam mustache" or "crap I dripped some on my slacks".
I was asked what I typically order or what my favorite drinks are or something like that. I think I talked passionately about how much I loved steamers while working the night shift and needing a hot decaf drink in the early morning.
The actual questions are going to be different depending on the person interviewing. They don't have a predetermined list of things they must ask or can only ask. My interview focused more on culture, attitude, and experience than products -- partially because I had several previous jobs in the industry and partially because I was interviewing for a leadership role. And my manager is less concerned about coffee knowledge and more concerned about your attitude and approach -- we can teach you about coffee, but we can't teach you to like people or treat customers well.

Get whatever drink makes you most comfortable in the interview. I really doubt the hiring manager cares if you drink coffee, tea, water, or anything else. I am not an employee, but I have interviewed many people.
roxman68 [OP]-18 points2y ago
Oh okay I guess I’ll just see what I’m in the mood for. Maybe I’ll ask if I can get 2 things for example a vanilla frappe and a small cup of coffee for a taste
OneRoseDark20 points2y ago
I wouldn't ask for two free drinks. Feels a tad tone-deaf. Get the thing you want and don't worry about the appearance of it. Your taste in drinks has literally no bearing on whether you're hired.
roxman68 [OP]0 points2y ago
I know it probably doesn’t but I still want to start off the interview good
verytiredbarista16 points2y ago
Would not recommend
hannah_nj15 points2y ago
if you get hired they’re gonna make you do a coffee tasting anyway, so just order what you want if they offer. the free drink isn’t meant to be anything other than a kind gesture, so don’t overthink it. if you *are* trying to “impress” though, make sure you order it as a “frappuccino” and not a “frappe” because the former is trademarked by starbucks and it’s what they prefer that we use
lahbeebs6 points2y ago
I used to do a few interviews at my store and just offered a drink as a courtesy, I couldn’t tel you what anybody ordered. I never brought it up in the interview so I wouldn’t worry about it, but yes I agree I wouldn’t get anything from the secret menu 😅
roxman68 [OP]0 points2y ago
Okay that’s what most people are saying here
desolateinfidel6 points2y ago
I don’t think it really matters too much. You aren’t expected to know everything about coffee yet and (from my experience with the managers I’ve had) they don’t care what the partners like to drink. Just order what you know and like and you’ll be able to explore the menu if you get hired!

Dude, I got a water, no ice. It’s a job interview, not a date. Instead of stressing over what you’re going to drink, study the company and make a list of smart questions about the actual work, like training, typical hours you would get, footwear and dress rules. Things that show you are serious about the job
roxman68 [OP]2 points2y ago
This is good advice. I don’t have any questions about the job right now. It seems pretty straightforward but I’ll probably not order anything I decided
FfierceLaw1 points2y ago
Good luck! I hope you get it!
roxman68 [OP]0 points2y ago
Thanks i probably will!

At my interview back in 2016 we did a coffee tasting, I think it was Verona, and it was so gross. My sm laughed and asked me what it tasted like and I told her it tasted like dirt. And I spent almost 5 years at the bux but now I do enjoy the taste of black coffee.
roxman68 [OP]0 points2y ago
I would probably lie and say it’s good 😂
Hot-Froyo2 points2y ago
Go with a coffee because during my interview I was asked questions about what would pair best with the kind of coffee I was drinking. I feel that Frappuccino’s take too long tbh. Hope this help!
