Tips for SSV interview (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gabiemarie
Finally applied for a shift supervisor position after everyone telling me that I should at my store. Any tips for the interview? I hate interviews so much so really anything helps. Like what are they looking for? What kinda questions do they ask?

It’s been over 2.5 years since I interviewed for an SSV, so this info might be outdated. Really focus on your coaching abilities! How do you approach coaching, how you lead/uplift your team. You’ll probably be asked an example of a time you coached another barista. I was also asked about a time I disagreed with an SSV, and how I handled it.

Just go in prepared with examples of coaching, how to improve and uplift your team, as well as how you deal with conflict with baristas and customers. They know you can do your job as a barista, so that’s not what they’re interested in here. Focus on things such as time management as well. I believe Starbucks likes the STAR method for answering interview questions, so google that too and try answering the questions with that method!

Also I’m not sure if it exists anymore, but there used to be a binder in the back room labeled like “Shift Supervisor” or something and gave info on what Starbucks is looking for in an SSV. It was pretty helpful for me. If there isnt a binder in your back room tho, you can try checking the Hub for it.

i was just promoted to SSV just 2 weeks ago and my SM asked things about coaching (about a time you coached) and how i would handle my partners and about a time i had to handle a particular situation (couldn’t remember what though sorry!) my SM is so sweet and understanding and it went really well. since i was a trainer before, that helped a lot with the coaching question. hope this helps you!
