if you do not have a very close understanding of how your coworkers work when they are on bar, PLEASE do not mess with the drinks they are making- OR pull their stickers or move around what’s on their bar. i mostly work bar because i’m pretty quick and consistent. i know most mean well when they try to finish a drink for me or start a new one while i’m at cold bar or grabbing something from the back, but it is not only incredibly irritating- it throws your bar person off track. if you have a spare second and want to really help whoever is on bar, then please make sure you are out of the walkways and make sure they are stocked. your bar partner doesn’t need you(unless they ask) to make drinks for them. they need you to keep them stocked and to have a clear path to wherever they have to go.
obviousthrowaway_51257 points2y ago
i agree, but bar is also a planted position—if someone is flexing in to support while you need product, they should grab the product and not you. if they try to flex anyway, ask them to grab your product.
crack-wolf [OP]3 points2y ago
you are correct. a lot of partners who don’t typically work bar though do not understand this. i’ll ask for ice or cups several times and everyone will ignore me until i have physically cannot make drinks because i don’t have something, and when i go to get it myself i’ll come back to find someone standing at bar screwing with my stuff. it drives me up the wall
wahdur46 points2y ago
this.

Is the way
kortette39 points2y ago
Unpopular opinion, I appreciate the help, especially when I’m on drive thru bar. When the DTO guy starts or finishes any drink for me, it just makes things go quicker and I don’t have a hard time figuring out the order because I can literally just look at the sticker and communicate with the person who was on my bar.
AceyFluff5 points2y ago
I think the only part of that that is an unpopular opinion is the fact that if somebody grabs a drink and nobody tells me, then I’m going to remake it because I automatically will assume that I’ve lost the drink. I’ve done it before and it’s annoying, but as long as people communicate properly I don’t think anyone cares. It does definitely help when the DTO person finishes or starts up drinks.
crack-wolf [OP]1 points2y ago
no i totally understand that everyone works different on bar and that some people appreciate it. but i think that’s part of knowing who you’re working with. if someone is unsure of whether or not their partner needs or wants help, all you have to do is ask- or at the very least communicate that the drink was finished.

Absolutely. And if you're on cold bar, I promise dt knows that strawberry acai you just set down is not the latte they're waiting on from me. You don't need to pull my next 5 stickers and put them on/around the hot bar just to get to yours. I'll put it where it belongs in a minute, I promise.
medusas-garden19 points2y ago
My store has a cold bar printer so we’ve been able to avoid that issue for a while now. And in general DTO is usually also shaking drinks so we hand them the sticker for shaken drinks whether it’s coming from the bar printer or cold bar printer.
Mimiagical18 points2y ago
A cold bar printer would make my life so much better
medusas-garden13 points2y ago
We were all skeptical at first but it’s really nice. Bar partners are able to stay planted at their espresso machines since they will only be receiving drinks that need the machines to make. Cold bar printer gets iced coffee, cold brew, fraps, and shaken drinks. And you can reroute the printers based on store needs.
-Zispy2 points2y ago
…wait, you don’t have a cold bar printer?
Mimiagical2 points2y ago
Yeah, I've worked at 3 stores now and haven't seen one! My current just has a dt printer and a cafe/mobile printer
Mr_SCPF2 points2y ago
My store just got built, we opened yesterday, and we have a cold bar printer. While is sounds sketchy, you can turn it on or off depending on whether you have a cold bar person or not.
kqs131 points2y ago
I read that all stores will be getting one eventually, but out of the 5 I have worked at, only 2 had cold bar printers
xEman26x31 points2y ago
Yeah don’t finish my drinks and don’t mis queue my cups
linipanini27 points2y ago
YES!!! I am picking up shifts at a store near me and I didn’t realize how much people messing with my stickers threw me off until someone started pulling mine without asking. She started pulling and was like “I need this one…. pull pull pull… yeah this one, (shoves sticker in my face) right now.” I immediately turned to her and said “hi, I know you don’t know me, but don’t touch my stickers. I can only do two drinks at a time and when you pull all the stickers out and line them up I start to have a panic attack and then you get zero drinks. I know you need this drink but the cafe needs the three drinks that you pulled before it.” Agh pisses me off.
Ok-Responsibility73513 points2y ago
You are only supposed to pull 2 stickers, anyway, if we do things correctly. I have one Barista, whom I absolutely adore, but she pulls 5 to 10 stickers at a time and it just kills me. The better beverage way is only 2 stinking stickers. Pull 2, finish a drink & hand it out, then pull another to replace it. I can usually handle 3 to 4 if I am really on a roll, but it really irritates the crap outta me when people just go nuts pulling them. If I am on bar and choosing to do that, it's my bar and that's different.
linipanini13 points2y ago
Exactly! Like if it’s someone else’s bar time they can do what they want, but I was taught you have two hands for a reason, so max it out at two drinks. Once I’m almost done with one, I start the next. It’s why I’m one of the fastest on bar at my store (not bragging, just saying it makes me really efficient). So when it’s my bar, NO TOUCHIE. 😂
Mimiagical9 points2y ago
If my next few stickers are for cold bar or drip coffees or whatever, it's kind of nice to see that 6 shot americano down the line and have shots pulling for it but thats my only justification for it. We have partners that line up the entire top of the bar with 20+ stickers and thats excessive. I guess its live and let live though.
crack-wolf [OP]2 points2y ago
ESPECIALLY since there’s only so much counter space to work with. a full counter is a slow bar. i almost always pull 4/5 stickers at a time depending on what i’m working with bc i know i can finish or at least start those two or three craps before coming back to that espresso drink. but it’s because i know where IIIII am. when someone else does it for me it just sends me up the wal
silentwhisperer14842 points2y ago
YES D: Please do not sticker all 20 drinks. 5 at a time is usually max I let anyone pull for me, and the max I’ll pull for myself. I know I have a lot of drinks to make, but I am making them. You will get them soon and lining everything up does not make me faster. It makes me panic and things start to get too messy.
jams101525 points2y ago
Mostly same for me, but:
There is one partner at my store who has free reign of my bar. He and I can just bar-tango like no other, he knows exactly when I need him to step in, whether that be grabbing a refresher, wiping my splash zone, rinsing a pitcher. See, I am one of those people who is nonchalantly backstroking away (8 drinks going at once, no problemo!!) until they're suddenly drowning without warning (that light ice request on the last drink may as well be an anchor).
I don't swallow my pride and ask for help until it's too late, is what I'm saying.
He reads me and just prevents those breakdowns by queuing this shot or heroically making that one crazily-modded killmerightnowchiatto. And the relief I feel when I work a shift with him is so great, because if I fail, he won't let me fail.
LegendOfJakelope9 points2y ago
Ahh, gotta love the shifts where you and the other person on Bar just vibe. I have two or so where we get a really good back and forth going, esp in regards to taking overflow, starting shots/foam/etc, batching, so on. I love working bar with those good people where you just get into a nice flow for a few hours.
crack-wolf [OP]2 points2y ago
my closest coworker could literally do anything she wanted to my bar and i’d still be happy about it because we both know how the other works. we might as well be professional ballroom dancers when we’re on bar together. but everyone else i work with is just out of touch and doesn’t know how to communicate or work quickly and efficiently.
Alana_Chowdhury_15 points2y ago
Literally on my 10 after being on bar. I hate when I go to pour a latte and the person on drive to over so I’m like. 🧍♀️
crack-wolf [OP]2 points2y ago
right!? especially when they’re slower at just finishing the drink than you are, like damn i could’ve had that finished and been on to my next drink but now i have to stand here like a jas class and wait for you to get outta the way
Alana_Chowdhury_2 points2y ago
I had someone finish my drink but they didn’t put a lid on it???? Like thank you for finishing my drink but not even putting a lid on what.
crack-wolf [OP]2 points2y ago
just the other day someone finished one, put a lid on top but didn’t close it, and then LEFT IT on my bar counter. as soon as i picked it up to put it on the handoff it just spilled all over the floor and i had to remake the whole damn thing
Alana_Chowdhury_1 points2y ago
Hands. They would catch these hands OMG
HamiltonPolka12 points2y ago
My first store was busy but a bit on the smaller side so at bar you could listen to what was being ordered and get it started before the cup was placed. This was back when we were marking cups. And the manager was very likable but was not very capable on bar. She was at POS and I was on bar and I hear Venti Americano so I pull my shots, line up my shot glasses, and then grab the cup and proceed to coat my hand in scalding water because she had filled the cup with water for me without saying anything
medusas-garden5 points2y ago
I spilled a venti hot americano all over my hand during training. Not fun. If we hadn’t been so quick with treating it it would’ve been a pretty bad burn
Lucky_Ant_24109 points2y ago
I always ask I’m very scatterbrained and don’t mind when ppl pull my stickers or finish my drinks but when I’m helping on bar I always ask first if there okay with it if there not I’ll just take whatever drinks they give me and restock and clean if they don’t give me anything
crack-wolf [OP]1 points2y ago
yes! asking first if you don’t already know if they want you to do something is huge! i don’t like when people just grab sri let’s or drinks for me when i’m on bar but if someone ASKS if there’s anything they can make for me i’d be more than happy to drop a cup or two for them to snag.
olivinemultichrome8 points2y ago
The one exception to this, for me: please for the love of all that is holy somebody please whip/finish/lid my Frappuccino’s and iced mochas so I don’t collapse the cup and spill drinks everywhere fighting with the fucking done kids that never fit right
ratguy556 points2y ago
i ABSOLUTELY hate it when my coworkers pull out all the stickers i the queue and just place them around the espresso machines!!! it does NOT help and now i have to peel off the stickers instead of just pulling them out
square_pulse6 points2y ago
Oh this does not only apply for bar, this also applies for warming and CS.
Over time, I have become really good at warming to handle all incoming stuff and do it as efficient and quick as the tickets come out (mobile, delivery, cafe AND the superhearing of the incoming next cafe order of a customer), and I hate it so much when someone messes with the tickets when I am bowing down to get whatever the fuck food I need to pull out of the tray while some random barista pulls out the ticket, thinking they're helping me, and sticks them to the metal thing at the warming station or on some bag that I didn't register that this is a new item to be done. NO. DON'T MESS WITH THE TICKETS, I've seen so many mishaps with warmed stuff that went to the trash because I didn't see the ticket or I did the ticket already but it didn't get stuck onto the bag because someone stuck it elsewhere. It just throws me off and I have gotten a couple of "friendly reminders" from my SM and SSV that I should do my job better even though I am doing it already as efficient, but my reg barista or sometimes CS barista walks by and thinks they're helping. Funnily, when I am planted and the reg barista and CS barista is doing their job, we're extemely well coordinated and no one makes mistakes.
Please don't mess with planted positions!! If stuff is blinking or making noises, just leave it to the planted barista!!
The only time I think it's fine for someone to step in is when there's a bunch of complicated orders incl TikTok drinks and my super strong partner steps in and takes all the complicated stuff so I can focus on making the (less complicated) hot drinks (I am just a 2 month old bean and still learning on bar, am not super fast, but also not too slow).
[deleted]5 points2y ago
Omg I have this one coworker who goes around trying to finish drinks whenever she’s on DTO or window and it drives me up the wall 😭 I know she means well and like I get what she’s trying to do but PLS GET OUT OF MY WAY
The_Septic_Shock5 points2y ago
My store is the exact opposite, if there isn't a large line or there's drinks on opposite bars, we start, finish or straight up do the drink for them. We work very closely together and I feel like it has helped us be closer as a team with great communication
crack-wolf [OP]1 points2y ago
i totally feel that when it’s slow, that’s how it should be. the problems start when your cafe is loaded to the nines with people waiting, and a dt line wrapped around the building. that’s pretty much my store from open till about 7 at night.
lilkiosk5 points2y ago
I could have written this
dthomp08064 points2y ago
I don't mind if people help start or finish cold bar drinks, but do not touch the hot bar. Then you're just in the way. And usually no one pulls stickers unless it's cafe bar and they are looking for a cafe sticker instead of making the 10 mobile orders first.
silentwhisperer14842 points2y ago
YES!!! I hate it so much and it instantly puts me in a bad mood. I am good at bar. I am great at bar. I will get your drinks out fast if you keep me stocked and stay out of my way. There have been so many times where people just start grabbing my drinks and start making them or try finishing them. But it pisses me off so much because it seems like every time they do that, they mess up the drink and I have to do it over again. Could’ve been avoided if they would just let me be. I hate to sound so entitled or something, and I appreciate the help when it’s busy, but please stop throwing me off and stop name-calling me when I get upset because someone decided to start/finish my drink wrong :(
juliabhappy2 points2y ago
Ugh my manager is so guilty of pulling stickers, we’ve all told them multiple times not to cause it messes up our flow and can disturb mobile order times but every time they wander over to bar, they just stand there, and pull 8-10 stickers. They also don’t help at all even if they think bar needs help, they think pulling stickers is help enough. Ugh
Guazabaron2 points2y ago
I always love the help as long as the person does well organizing the queue. Gives me an idea what’s coming and helps me plan a couple steps ahead. But I also trained way back when before stickers appeared. It’s also a good way to learn how work together and how to jive with each other.
Kalhm2 points2y ago
I 100% understand where you are coming from, but ig I’ve never had this kinda feeling on bar. I was train to work around people doing that and getting use to it. But I also work in a kiosk in a mall, so maybe It’s just because I’m use to working in a more confined space
crack-wolf [OP]1 points2y ago
yeaaahh.... mall spaces or licensed stores/cafe only stores are a bit more casual and even when it’s busy it just makes sense to finish certain things. but a full dt & cafe store is a whole nother ballgame
stqmine2 points2y ago
yup.
nomorehangers0 points2y ago
you sound like a pussy.
[deleted]1 points2y ago
lmao get a job you fucking loser 😂
jackissosick0 points2y ago
Train other people the correct way to bar. If everyone knows the right way to do it, there should not be any crossing over each other or getting in each other's way. If you feel like people are in your way it's likely partially your fault as well
crack-wolf [OP]1 points2y ago
i’ve trained in the past but was a rehire at my current store and have only there about 8 months. most of the problem people who don’t know what their doing are actually partners who have been at that specific store six months or so longer than me. i try to remind them when it happens but some people don’t like being corrected
LoopyBitch1 points2y ago
well not necessarily. OP said they’re only a 2 month partner so they’re relatively new. they’re definitely not a barista trainer and (depending on the store culture) some of the more seasoned baristas with that behavior might ignore their criticism or opinion on how they bar bc they’re new . it just doesn’t make sense to say it’s OPs fault for how other people function. maaaaaaybe i could see ur point if they were a seasoned partner that just being a snobby prick and doesn’t like redirecting/ helping people figure things if they can help out, but clearly they’re not lol. Not to mention the fact that people have personalities. so they really can be trained by the best trainer possible, and still not grasp things, or develop certain behaviors, etc etc
jackissosick0 points2y ago
It doesn't really make a difference if they're new or not. It's not a criticism or anything, there is a set way you're supposed to bar. You can communicate regardless of how new you are. If someone is doing something you don't like, tell them what you'd like them to do
LoopyBitch2 points2y ago
there is absolutely NOT a set way ur supposed to bar. are there standards? yes. but different people function differently on bar and other positions as well. what i meant was the older partners may look at the newer one as unable to do things (like i said depending on the store and the people in it) and start to take over bc they don’t think they can handle it. if they try to tell them to stop, it may not fix the situation because of the older partners preconceived notions. however i do agree that communication is important regardless of how new you are, and being upfront with the partners around you is absolutely crucial to having a good rhythm and teamwork. but saying it’s OPs fault still wouldn’t make sense since they can’t “train” people how to bar since they aren’t completely familiar with bar themselves. and even then you’d be training on a preference and not a standard bc that’s technically not against policy unless the other partner is planted. just bc it makes u uncomfortable doesn’t necessarily make it incorrect either. i personally hate it when people do it, so i’ll tell them to please stop touching my stickers and that i can handle bar on my own. but i’m not “training” them, i’m making them aware of my preference for them to leave me to my own devices
