New partner, don’t know how to really do this (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kuuraiyu
Hi there, i’m a new partner, I have only been on for a couple weeks and just started training. I have a few issues, for one, I applied for part time and asked for about 25 hours a week, but am being scheduled for 37. I have recently been having a lot of mental health issues, my dad is ill, and I in general am kind of at my breaking point. I have no idea how to ask my SM for less hours, or if they will get upset or annoyed at me for changing my availability or swapping shifts with anyone in my first few weeks. I don’t want to mess anything up or be a pain so early on, but i’m really struggling right now and need help. Any advice would help on how to go about this would be really appreciated.

Talk to your manager about the scheduling.

if i were you i'd go up to your manager and let them know you got hired for about 25 hours and that you can't do any more than that. you definitely should not be putting this job above your mental health no matter what. if your manager can't comply with the agreement you were hired upon then i'd quit

As a barista you're never guaranteed a set number of hours but you can limit your availability.

Advocate for yourself. No one else is going to.

I am dealing with a very similar situation. It’s definitely difficult, but you have to remember…

Your life comes first. Your mental health, your family, your stress levels all come first. It’s okay! Speak with your manager (or whoever handles your scheduling; I’m in a unique cafe situation so I don’t know the procedure for SB and can’t give advice there) and remind them you came in as part time and you need to drop down to 25 hours or less.

They don’t need to know the reasons why. If they get annoyed or upset, that’s on them. You’re not pulling one over on them. You applied for PT and have been FT for weeks. They will figure out how to handle it moving forward.

I struggle a lot with worrying about letting people down, managers and coworkers especially. But at the end of the day you need to do what’s best for you and take care of yourself. It is totally reasonable and acceptable to ask to go down in hours.

Good luck and I hope things turn up for you!
