Always angry and green beans trenta rant with extra Carmel drizzle(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lucky_Ant_2410
Recently I just keep getting so mad at green beans newer ones older ones I just feel like they have no work ethic and I’m left to train/deal with them and help them every second even when I’m not a trainer I don’t take my anger out on them cause I give them the benefit of the doubt and I have self control but it’s getting so out of hand I keep being alone on bar well I have one newbie in ovens who is not throwing food in the oven and one newbie on drive thru never putting the order in right and me having to constantly go to the window to fix minor issues as well as the newbie staring at me waiting for a drink I already put next to them I’m also alone on bar often. What am I to do but suffer I’m not a trainer or a shift I’m just a base level barista :(

You were a green bean once, think about what kinda advice you would appreciate at that time, then tell them that.

especially considering the massive labor shortage and the obscenely short training period, i bet those green beans are doing the best they can. i would quit if i had been hired during all this.

It’s not even like ya know normal newbie issues like not knowing we’re the buttons are it’s like they don’t listen one of them doesn’t put any of the syrups on the drinks so I’m always like “don’t forget to put what they ask on the drink “ like they will order a coldbrew with cold foam and 4 pumps of toffee nut and two pumps of sf vanella and the sticker will say “coldbrew” and if it was a once or twice thing sure it was probably a accident but it’s litteraly every other drink lol during a rush I’ve been with star bucks for a year and a half and I have seen many green beans idk why this group is different

I do but it’s not completely there fault the real question is we’re my shift leader and other help that’s suppose to be on the floor with me like it would be so much smoother if other people did there job so I wasn’t the only one able to help them idk what it is about these three green beans but most of the time they stand there doing nothing (not even joking lol they just wait for something to do) then they don’t do there job even tho there right there the amount of time I’ve had to say hey (Insert name) your on ovens we need that pastry when they were standing next to the ovens is way to much I try to give them advice but also when I was a green bean there not even super new they all three have been here 3 months lol idk what the issue is but lien I said I haven’t been taking it out on them or like yelling at them just suffering waiting for the day they don’t need my help so I can make drinks and not also do ovens and drive thru

Christ on a bike. Have you tried bringing any of this up with someone high up the food chain?

I definitely get this. I am VERY patient with new partners and I give them lots of slack and plenty of time to adjust. But at a certain point it becomes apparent that the issue is that they’re an awful worker and not necessarily just that they’re new. We’ve had some great new people and we’ve also had a lot of new people lately that just completely lack critical thinking skills and I have to hold their hand through everything. And a lot of them have been in the work force for years and have had different jobs so it’s not like they’re just young 16 year olds trying to adjust to joining the work force. I watched one of the newbies take someone’s order in the middle of taking out some trash and grabbed them a hot coffee without washing his hands first. I even told him to wash his hand first and he just apologized and continued what he was doing. I had to pull him aside and tell him that under no circumstances can he serve customer drinks with trash hands or do ANYTHING after handling trash without washing his hands. I had to correct him multiple times on how to properly organize the handoff plane - how hard can that be?? It’s so frustrating dealing with multiple green beans (that shouldn’t even be considered green beans anymore bc they’ve been here for months but are still green beans imo bc they still haven’t adjusted) with limited capabilities because it’s so difficult putting them in spots that they won’t fuck up in. DTR is usually taken by this older woman with dementia bc that’s the only spot she can handle (which is fine, she’s a hard worker and she does her best and we accommodate her) so I can either put them on DTO or CS. If I put them on DTO they fail to keep the window partner in check bc she frequently gets confused and if I put them on CS backups don’t get made and I don’t have time to tell them everything they need to do. Sometimes I can put them on ovens when it’s not as busy but during peak we sell so much food that me or someone fast on ovens is usually planted there. I try to give them bar time but I have to make sure I pair them with a strong bar partner and have a cold bar support person to keep business flowing. Sorry for the rant but it’s soooo difficult dealing with incompetent new people especially as a shift. Again, I’m very patient and I try to help new people as much as possible but some people are not made for this job and it shows.

I would pull them aside if you ever get a second and talk about some specific problems you're having and how you feel they should be working on them. I'm in the same position as you, but I caught on pretty fast and I've been helping other newbies constantly and they've all been super appreciative, but I see the same issue with other baristas just not having the same work ethic. My store also is lucky enough to have plenty of people on when it's busy, so the ones that aren't trying don't bring us down much, but if I were you I'd try taking the orders yourself and having them type it especially if you're able to remember it when they miss something. Or talk to a shift about getting the newbies bar time because at least from warming you can help them on bar and move to drive thru more easily. Idk but good luck!

I feel this also.
Note I'm kinda a green bean also (I've been with Starbucks for 2 months). I'm an older college student though and Starbucks isn't my first job so I'm used to working and finding my own things to do while still doing assigned jobs.
We have a few partners who either stand there and just stare at every one or they just don't seem to understand the concept of MOVEMENT.
We have one partner who states "I am a customer service individual only" and refuses to do anything other than register/DTO/DTR. He is getting fired here soon.
Another partner who can DTO/DTR solo and who is a badass at doing that but moves super slowly on bar and who will just stand there and stare at you as you're making drinks.
The other ones are super young and just don't seem to know how jobs work or how to work. Everyone is super patient with those kids cuz they're legitimately kids. One is 16 and we're all super protective cuz we've had a few creepy old men leer at her (she is well... endowed & I came so close to decking a man through the drive thru window).
