green bean here! so the other day i was on register, and someone scanned their sbux app and i saw they had enough points for a free drink, so i asked them if they wanted to use it today, and they said yes. after the transaction, my shift lead/trainer told me not to tell them if they have a free drink and that they’re supposed to tell me if they have enough points and they want to use it. but i feel like some people don’t know they have enough points and it’s nice to let them know. what do you guys do?

Eh that’s kind of weird that your shift said that to you. I mean there’s no rule of what you’re supposed to do, but in general I don’t bother asking because most people have lots of points but for some reason don’t want to use them.

Your shift needs to be re-trained I think. You're supposed to tell them so do! After all it's their money. I don't mean to sound aggressive, it's just that idiot shifts grind my gears!

i love asking people because people who have the gold card i find most of the time have no idea they have rewards so it doesn’t hurt to ask! also helps the transaction feel a little more personal which helps with connects (also a supervisor and always encourage my partners to do so!)

We’re instructed to tell people. Otherwise you’re setting yourself up to have to void and redo the transaction because they wanted to use their points.

this! i’m a green bean too and i’ve already had to do this multiple times because people ask to use their points after i’ve went through with the transaction and handed them their items

I was on drive through being trained, and the barista on window asked the customer if they wanted to use their points for the free drink. The customer of course didn't want to for some reason, but still.
I sit here studying trying to remember things so I don't freak out tomorrow on my first non-training shift.

A shift training me told me the exact opposite! Never put it through until you have asked because if they wanted to and forgot to tell me, it's too late or has to be totally refunded and reentered. I think you were doing it the best way so the customer is not disappointed if they meant to use them.

my shift always asks if people want to use their rewards. your shift is sketch

I’m a shift, and I’ve definitely asked customers the same question. There’s no rule against it!
