New shift and ready to retire (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I just got rehired at Starbucks a month ago. I was a barista for a few years and left for a management opportunity elsewhere then lost my job due to Covid and got rehired as shift at the bucks.

I really thought I was getting the hang of it for second but then we had a ton of call outs, have been short staffed, and have been getting busier and busier. My manager keeps bringing up having a plan but on some days I feel like it doesn’t matter if I have a plan or not because I’m drowning. Today I closed with a new barista and I was glued to the bar/register all night. I kept a timer going and tried my best but I’m just one person. We didn’t get out till very late and I’m certain that we missed things during the close.

I feel like I’ve been putting too much pressure on myself to perform and meet the expectations of the job while facing impossible circumstances. I’m hoping that it gets better because after the stress I’ve experienced this past week I want to find a new job and hang up the apron. My manager just keeps telling me I’m doing a great job but I don’t know if that’s honest or just them trying to keep me as an employee. This sucks and I guess I’m writing this to know if anyone thinks it will get less stressful and easier for me overtime?

Just a barista here, but you sound like the kind of shift I would work hard to help, so hang in there. Sounds like you may have a decent manager too. Even the CEO went on CNBC last week to say that customer traffic is at a record. I hope you get some good baristas with work ethic, sense of urgency and sense of humor and empathy and we will all survive this 🙂

I feel this deeply. Closing with a green bean is like closing with half a person. Except the one I’ve got- I’d be better off closing alone. I am exhausted from repeating myself and turning around to find that out of the 3 things I told them to do- only half of one was done.

Sometimes things get missed at close but as long as you got the big stuff it’s probably fine. And orders coming late is the literal worst! Especially when you still have to pull from it.
