Barista here in Miami, we were just informed we got a raise! too from 10.50/hr we are gonna start making 12/hr which isn't amazing, but two steps forward and one step backward is still one step forward or whatever that saying is, anyways yay us

what's the minimum wage in Miami? it's so crazy how much different the pay is in different areas. I work in downtown Seattle and I got started off at $17.23 (minimum wage is $15)
Darcie_Autham 6 points 2y ago
Lucky. West Hollywood rates are $15/ hr. I got started at that.

Well considering people shit on the streets in seattle and the place is a pile of garbage with ridiculous hosing costs, they practically have to start you off that high otherwise no one would work there lmao.

It's literally no different from any other coastal city. Homelessness is a problem anywhere there is no adequate support for, or in areas that don't literally bus their unhoused citizens to other cities like Seattle!

They're not paying a premium for the nonexistent ick factor. They're paying COL minimum wage. They pay $16 because $16 is the minimum they legally can. That's it.

Idk. Seattle isn't a pile of garbage man. It's wildly expensive and COL has vastly outpaced wage growth, but there's a reason that's happened. On one hand, it's incredibly popular to live in. The other, business owners
would like the government to keep the threshold of pay as low as possible. Nothing about the local homeless we refuse to actually help in a meaningful way is involved in wage determination. A quiet community store at the edge of Seattle's border offers the same base wage as a store smack dab in Pioneer Square or Westlake.

Except they arent paying COL minimum wage, clearly the OP stated they are paying significantly more. Typically starbucks will start like 20 cents over min. Not a dollar and a half. But thats aside the point. I dont know if you have been to Seattle lately but the place is an actual shithole compared to the suburbs or anywhere else thats not Chicago or major cali cities, and the local government couldnt give a damn about it falling apart. Some people might have a good experience living there but they are either ignorant to the problem or are living in the few nice parts left. Overall the citys “ignore it and hope it gets better” problem solving technique and shitty city council is much of the issue but its overall a much larger problem. Trying to blame the lack of problemsolving on busing people in is just one of the ignorant tactics used. Ok great you have found an issue, now solve it, its what we voted these politicians in for. Remember this is the same city council that shouted defund the police then cowered and demanded for police help when they were in danger from violent “radical right wing extremists”. The city is a lost cause imo. But again just my opinion.

>Except they arent paying COL minimum wage, clearly the OP stated they are paying significantly more.

In OPs situation. In Seattle they pay you maybe twenty cents over minimum to start, hopefully respecting your raises if you transfer in.

>I dont know if you have been to Seattle lately

I live here, I work here, I grew up here.

>Some people might have a good experience living there but they are either ignorant to the problem or are living in the few nice parts left.

Nope. My coworkers definitely don't live in the "nice parts" (I assume you mean like suburbs further out?) and most of us volunteer in some capacity in the area.

>rying to blame the lack of problemsolving on busing people in is just one of the ignorant tactics used

I did not try to blame the lackluster support system for unhoused people on bussing them from their area to a coastal town. I'm saying that there's more unhoused people where there's fair weather and it's a destination for bussing tactics.

>The city is a lost cause imo. But again just my opinion.

That has absolutely nothing to do with how much Starbucks pays it's employees, because they'll make the same shit wage middle of downtown core as they would in a quiet suburb.

idk why you're so angry about Seattle lmao yeah it sucks to live here (I live here! and work here!) but it's not a "shithole" it's a place where there's no help given to the people who need it. maybe you've never been homeless before (I HAVE!) but it fucking sucks. and 99% of the time it isn't the individuals fault. I think you should go talk to your local homeless people. they're nice people. they have stories. they joke around. and the ones that aren't nice? they have every right to be angry with the way their life has gone.

Seattle isn't any worse than any other place in the US. saying it's a "lost cause" is saying you don't care for the literal thousands of people who are struggling every single day to get by. be salty about getting paid less than me but as someone who has been homeless, who has a dangerous job, and who puts up with everything with a smile, I deserve it.

(I forgot to mention in my original comment - the minimum wage DOWNTOWN is $16, so it's only a dollar more. but with a studio bedroom costing upwards of $1100 month, that's not much!)
