So, we're getting new hires this week. I'm a shift and I want to make them feel welcome and train them properly. Tell me what is something you wish you were tought better at the beginning? How can I make them into good baristas? Things to avoid? Thanx everyone!

Please teach what should be full pumps and what should be half pumps!! And I would double check, because I’ve asked shifts these and then looked it up and the shift was wrong. Also a small one is matcha should be cold bar number of scoops, I didn’t know that for a while, oops

Literally same 😂 I was putting the wrong number of matcha scoops in until a couple months ago

something i learned but not a lot of baristas at my current store know... you can hand customers items in drive when you greet them before taking their payment, drops drive times a whole of you just give them a drink w one hand & take a card w another

This! My SM told me this after a bit and it was an absolute game changer during peak. You can have them pop their card in and hand stuff out while jt runs.
Also, if you’re ok with it, it’s faster if you take their card for them.

One of the things I didn’t learn until a few months in is when doing food, put the food and warming paper in the appropriate bag and then pull the warming paper out. I struggled with this change at first, but then once I got the hang of it it makes things so much easier.

Another way to do it is keep the food and warming paper in the tongs, and pull the warming paper out while keeping the food in the tongs. Works wonders

I am a former partner recently rehired after 4 years. I had such high regard to my onboarding experience the first time that I nearly regret returning. This second experience for me went like this-- No passport or handbook, no coffee sips, no real tour, no team introduction, no communication regarding training plan or schedule. I mean, what is up?? It is absolutely crucial to help your new hires to feel welcomed and receive that sense of belonging-- introductions, actually immerse in the real Starbucks onboarding experience and standards! Doing the right thing means being questioned by others with bad habits! Ensure that you are empowering and leading them to success!

Wow everyone! Thanx for you inputs! New hires first day went great! Fortunately we're not a DT so we don't have to worry about times and all that jazz. Followed your advice and all went smooth! Plus the guy is an absolute legend, catches everything on right away. Don't know if in the US has the Attensi training platform but here in the UK it makes things a bit easier with theoretical stuff (it's an app with small games and training modules). Other partners were very open, accepting and helpful to him and I think this is gonna be a great start!
