I’m an opener. Literally every shift I work is an open. I also live 35-40 mins away (because I hate myself). I get to work about 5-6 mins before 430am and am just hanging out. Jamming to 80s hits, waiting for my baristas to show up. 430am hits, no ones here but me. I call my one opener and the convo goes as follows: Barista: hey I just tried calling the store Me: okay. No ones in the store, soooo B: I pulled a muscle in my back yesterday so I won’t be coming in Me: okay….? Did you contact the manager yesterday?
They did not. My other opener, a new transfer, didn’t show up either. Manager isn’t answering the phone. It’s past opening time. No ones here but me. Pray for me 🥲
Edit: I just got home. The customers who tried the DT before I got into the building were hella chill and understood the predicament and went to snag their mobiles and order elsewhere. I managed to get my two 7a partners to come in and we opened the doors at 530am! It was a mess lol. Not gonna lie. My SM finally got back to me, he came in and got some others to come in early as well as work the floor himself so that was nice. Still a shitshow, but a fully staffed shitshow so it’s fine lol
Edit edit: the new transfer apparently emailed the SM saying she was back in her home city (this was basically a summer job for her) and that she quit. Found this out right before I left which means he didn’t get or see the email until late morning today.

Not your problem. You get to sit in your car and get paid until someone shows up. Also your managers only job is to pick up the phone when you call when they arent on admin or on the floor and they failed to do so. Do not let your manager try and avoid paying you, and hopefully someone will show up so you can properly open.

Oh for sure. Deffffff making sure I get that 430a-12p shift pay.

At least you get paid for this time! Write it down as a missed punch, you showed up on time and were prepared to work, don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t get paid for the time you sat out there waiting for someone to show up.

How'd it end up?
LittleGreenFungus [OP]7 points2y ago
Edited the main post, but my manager got us staffed and we had 8 partners (including myself and SM) on the floor for peak.
jayessdubs1 points2y ago
What's your usual number for peak? Glad you got staffed at least !
LittleGreenFungus [OP]1 points2y ago
Usually we run 7 partner peaks during the week and if we are lucky we do 8 partners on the weekends. Usually see somewhere between the high sixties to low seventies customers per half hour.

As an opener SSV I never worked 5 shifts a week - just 3. and I opened the store on time maybe once a week. all baristas were late with zero consequences.
such bullshit.
LittleGreenFungus [OP]1 points2y ago
That blows my mind. I have one opener who is consistently a few mins late and I’m like “buddy. Pal. I need you here before 430. Not at 435” and have actually left him waiting outside until after I finished the safe and till counts because he seems to refuse to give me a heads up that he’s running late. Homie is never reprimanded or anything and I honestly think it’s because he’s been a partner for 10+ years

Similar situation happened to me once. It definitely sucks. We had everyone show up at 4:30 except our shift so there was no one to unlock the doors so we had to sit in the parking lot till they showed up. We didn’t open till almost 6 (we open at 5). They accidentally overslept and lived roughly 30 minutes🙃 It wasn’t the worst but having to open late is definitely stressful, and I couldn’t imagine how stressful it would be with no one else/trying to find people to come in. Glad it all somewhat worked out for you
LittleGreenFungus [OP]2 points2y ago
Oof yeah. Before becoming a SSV I def had my fair share of instances where the shift didn’t show up until later for opens
